When you log into the WRTP54G, what firmware version is the unit running (upper right hand corner of the screen)?

Well I am not sure you will be able to find a WRTP54G anywhere if you did decide to replace it. At least not a new one. I would hold off on making any type of purchase. If anything, swap the modem out with your ISP but try to stay with Motorola SB-51xx series. Hopefully they don't give you any issues or try to charge you. I know my ISP is good about these things. I can walk in with my cable box or modem and swap it out for a new one, no questions asked.
Try to further diagnose the issue when you are local to the hardware. Watch the LED's. Check you modem signal levels using this website.

Hi again,
Now that I'm home I can confirm that my Internet connection is definately dropping. I've gone further and tried other devices at home such as my PS3 to see if that's caused any issues, but so far it only seems the WRTP54G /
Voip
is causing the Motorola Cable Modem to lose it's connection. I may even call Comcast now to see if i can drive 8miles up the road to their center and swap it out... Outside of the cable modem or Linksys WRTP54G, is there anything else it could be?
Thanks once again.

Not really. While it could be the modem and it can't hurt to swap it out if it is no cost to you, if this is only happening when there is streaming audio being sent from the WRTP54G, the issue is probably with the WRTP54G itself.
If it comes down to that, if it is within your budget, pick up a WRT54GL from your local electronics store like BestBuy. Connect it to your modem and run everything through it. Then disable the wireless function on the WRTP54G and connect it to the WRT54GL so that it is only being used as a telephone adapter. This way, if it is the problem, your internet will stay rock solid and you can have
Vonage
replace your WRTP54G with a V-Portal.

I have a spare WRT54G wireless router here that I will try.. One other thing I've noticed is that my PS3 (Playstation 3 Network) Keeps signing me out every 10-15mins or so... Without any phone calls.. But this is also going through the WRTP54G, so I'll give that a try also... Hopefully it is the modem. I really like the idea of having just one device such as the WRTP54G rather than a wireless router AND an additional phone adapter.
Thanks.

Hi again,
I'm typing this through a newly installed Linksys WRT54G with the latest firmware V1.02.5 . So far so good with the internet.. One thing I am a little unsure of is how to configure the
Vonage
Phone Router WRTP54G just as a phone adpater and have it plug into the WRT54G ? I have disabled the wireless and set the adapter to a different IP address than the WRT54G (within the same subnet) and have the
Vonage
Phone Router WRTP54G obtain its IP address automatically.. I have the internet port of the
Vonage
Phone Router WRTP54G plugged into a LAN port of the WRT54G.. But i can't ping the WRT54G
Vonage
Phone Router.. Not sure if I should configure the
Vonage
Phone Router to use a STATIC IP address or PPoE? Or if i should leave it on automatic configuration.. Tried static and auto and neither seem to work.... Unfortunately the original problem does seem to stem from the
Vonage
Phone Router because since installing the WRT54G and having a constant ping running, it's not so much as had one hiccup.....
Thanks for taking the time to read.

I kind of figured that it might be the WRTP54G when the biggest issue occurred when it was actually in use besides the occasional hiccup to the internet connectivity.
What IP are you trying to ping?
All that you do is connect WRTP54G WAN port to an ethernet port WRT54G. Leave the WRTP54G set to DHCP so it pulls an IP from the WRT54G. Once it gets an IP, that would be the IP that you ping. However, by default, ICMP requests to WAN port are blocked so you wont see a response. YOu would need to connect a PC to a LAN port on the WRTP54G, log into it, and disable the Block WAN Requests from under the security section. You would also need to go to the Administration section and enable Remote Admin if you want to be able to access it's interface from PC's connected to the WRT54G. If you choose to go with a static IP on the WAN port of the WRTP54G, you would need to use the same network as what the WRT54G communicates on.
Example:
IP Address - 192.168.1.200
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
GW - 192.168.1.1
DNS - You can find these on the Status page in the WRT54G
This assuming your WRT54G is using a default IP of 192.168.1.1
Once your phone is working. That is it. Your now only using the WRTP54G as a telephone adapter since nothing is depending upon it for routing function or internet connectivity. However, in this set up, you may notice a decrease in voice quality since you no longer have any QOS.
What you can now do is flash your WRT54G with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. Just make sure you check the hardware version number or your WRT54G and make sure it is on the compatibility list for these 3rd party firmwares. Both of which provide robust features and very good QOS. Make sure to read instructions and feel comfortable doing this before actually performing the firmware flash. Would hate to be the person who recommended it and then you turn it into a brick by messing something up.
Also keep an eye on the WRTP54G. If it continues to drop audio in this set up, it is truly defective and will need to be replaced with another phone adapter.

Getting late but i just wanted to let you know that I managed to hook up the WRTP54G just as a phone adapter, and the same problem remains.. After about 20-30 secs after i make or receive a phone call it knocks off the cable modem.. Looks like I need to order a new phone adapter.. The weird thing is though, and i don't know if you have an answer for this, but the WRTP54G grabs a DHCP address of 192.168.16.x By default it's 192.168.15.1. So as to not have to reconfigure all my static IP devices at home, i just changed the IP address of my WRT54G to 192.168.15.2 (didn't use 1 because i knew the WRTP54G would want that.. I have no idea where its getting the 16 address from? And to be honest, this late in the night, with the kids about to wake in a couple of hrs, i really don't care.. The phone adapter is shot, and i need a new one... Either am going to buy one off ebay for $70 odd bucks or go with a regular adapter and plug it in to the WRT54G.... I just wanted to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all your efforts, you have been fantastic, and have a Merry Christmas... I'm a bit gutted i won't get to speak to family abroad tomorrow being that its christmas, which is why i have
Vonage
for their free European calls... I may go for the 30secs get in the festive greetings before it all goes silent, but i think that'll just annoy the other party..
Have a good one sir !

The reason the LAN side of the WRTP54G is auto assigning itself 192.168.16.1 address is only because you changed the leading router to 192.168.15.1. There was a bug discovered that if you daisy chained 2
Vonage
devices which both have 192.168.15.0 networks, PC's connected behind the second router would not get internet because the default GW of 192.168.15.1 would not forward packets to the leading router. So the fix was put into the firmware to auto detect the network being assigned to it's WAN port and if the same subnet, it would auto increment to the next C class subnet of 192.168.16.0
If you used the Linksys default of 192.168.1.1 on the WRT54G, then you could assign a static IP of 192.168..1.x to the WRTP54G and the LAN IP of the WRTP54G would stay at 192.168.15.1. If you leave it as is and want to assign a static IP address to the WAN port of the WRTP54G, you will need to assign it an address of 192.168.15.x, subnet 2550.255.255.0, default GW of 192.168.15.1, and the DNS servers you find in the WRT54G obtained from ISP. On the LAN side, the WRTP54G will still auto assign itself an IP of 192.168.16.1 so that the LAN and WAN are on different subnets.
Now for actual issue. If the actual internet is still being dropped during an active call session, then sorry to say, but it is your modem, not the WRTP54G. If your modem is having issues supporting the stream of RTP packets, it needs to be replaced. If you are sure that when you notice the audio drops off, the internet is gone as well, this can't be the
Vonage
adapter. Since your PC's are connected through the WRT54G now, the internet is passed from modem to WRT54G to PC. If at that same moment in time the audio disappears, you can't browse internet or ping, you have identified the issue to be the modem. By replacing the WRTP54G, any
Vonage
adapter you get still have to stream RTP packets for audio so the modem may continue to act up. Even in your first post, you believe the internet was dropping off possibly even without the phone being in use.
Merry Christmas

Hi again,
I can now confirm that my modem is dropping off, even without the WRTP54G connected into the network... i'm only finding this out for sure now as everything before hand was going through the WRTP54G.. All I have connected is the WRT54G and no WRTP54G and around every 5 to 10mins the modem loses it's connection (online light goes out also on the modem)
The good news is that i have a Comcast tech due tomorrow, so hopefully he'll have a replacement modem in his van.. If not I can make the drive to their depot.. This really is good news as everything now seems to point to the modem as the culprit.. Meaning I may save $70 by not having to buy a replacement
Vonage
adapter. Unless its a problem with the tap or line outside (i know my cabling to the drop is spot on)
The case continues !!! Right off to enjoy some Christmas lunch... Thanks and Merry Christmas !
