Hi,
My sister has been a Vonage user for about 5 years. When she signed up she received a VT1005V (she signed up at the local best buy or circuit city). She has always had the problem of choppy calls when downloading or uploading files. I read the forums and set QOS for voice to maximum and that helped but didn't make the problem go away. Now 4 years later the problem is getting worse. Sometimes she calls me and all I hear is fax machine sounds (she doesn't own a fax). If she is downloading a large file it is like she is dropping every other word. Vonage has been of no help since the vt1005v is owned by her.
I would like to replace the vt1005v with a WRT54GP2 as I read some nice things about it (as long as you have the latest firmware). She has comcast cable.
Current setup: BEFCMU10v3 cable modem | VT1005V | WPN824 router/wireless
Proposed: BEFCMU10v3 cable modem | WRT54GP2
Do you think the problem is the vt1005v? Is the problem something else? Is the WRT54GP2 as good as I read? Thanks, |

Has she run a bandwidth test on Vonage's site or here to see if the problem is her Internet connection? Try running either of those and posting the results here and we may be able to instantly see if there is any issue.
You say that Vonage's tech support has been of no help. What exactly has been tried/attempted?
I'd run the tests first to see if there is any issue with the Internet service first, then list all the things that Vonage tech support has tried. If going through that doesn't reveal any explanation as to what is going on, but indicates that your Internet service itself is OK, then I'd try putting the WRT54GP2 behind the broadband device and use the VT1005V behind that for phone-only service. |

Bandwidth tests (I ran 2): 8400-8500 download 1800 upload
I called Vonage tech support about a year ago to try to solve this problem. They did the usual where is the device plugged in (before or after a router, are the ports open, etc), had me run the bandwidth test (back then the results were around 7000 download and 1500 upload, comcast gave a speed upgrade 6 months ago), check the QOS settings in the VT1005V (the setting was set to get Voice max priority). Then said the problem was with comcast and their packet shaping. I haven't called recently so my comment might be premature.
I have been reading other postings about choppy calls and people who replaced their old box with a VPortal reported the choppy calls went away. |

I know the recommended setup is as you have it set up with modem -- vt1005-- router.
I never had much success with that. The VT1005 touted QOS but it had its issues when it controlled my traffic. I put it after a router and have never had any issues like you mentioned in this configuration
I'd hang it after the router. Memory makes me think that router has QOS options as well so I'd just set them up to give priority to the VT 1005 and it should work better |
