According to this discussion whether or not you can use pulse dial is dependent on the telephone adatper you're using.

And according to this discussion at least one user testifies that their 1960s-era rotary phones worked fine with the V-Portal, although others noted that some features like call waiting and 3-way calling don't work.

I have discovered that pulse dialing is supported by the Motorola VT2142 ATA. I have read that it is supported by the V Portal (but I have not yet verified this). I have also discovered that it is not supported by the Cisco ATA186. Shall we start a list of all known Vonage-branded ATA's?

I know for a fact that my rt31p2 does not support the rotary phone I have connected to my phone line. it doesn't even ring it. but I can hear all the other phones ringing.

That's odd. Will it ring if you plug it into a POTS line?

actually the roatary phones would work w/ Vonage. it is still a phone. but of course to get the best results in call quality and to maek sure that you take advantage of the features that Vonage offers, Vonage requires users to use the touch-tone phones. some features do not work w/ the rotary phones.

You are correct that the RT31P2 does not support rotary phones to dial out with. It should ring for inbound calls though. The old Western Electric phones were very polarity sensative. If the tip and ring wires were swapped I suspect that it would work.

It used to be the previous home owner's phone. I can see that the phone line used to have additional voltage to help the phones ring. The phone itself looks really old and weighs a ton. either way, it works fine in terms of using it to talk and listen. It just doesn't dial out nor ring on an incoming call. no big deal.

Steve, I presume that it used to ring in a POTS line. I don't have one right now to test.

Oh that's the other thing. Back in the day, the phone company would charge you based on the number of phones you had and detected cheaters by testing the ringer resistance on the line. So folks would disconnect the ringers in their unauthorized phones.
