If I understand correctly, your three-year-old Vonage-branded router failed, and they offered you a replacement at no cost, asking only that you return the old one. (Please correct me if I do not understand correctly.)

There are not very many electronic products which which can be returned and replaced at no cost when they are three years old. But even when a product is brand new and fails out of the box, sellers who offer a free replacement ask you to return the failed product. If they didn't, they'd probably be giving away a whole lot of product in cases where no fault exists, no?

I think it is very decent of Vonage to ship the replacement before they receive the return. They understand the need to maintain telephone service and minimize down-time. But I don't find it unreasonable that they ask for the return of the old one, regardless of what they decide to do with it later.

Agreed,

Your getting $79.99 ( trade in allowance / less shipping ) for your old, broken down, junk device.

Very True ! There is absolutely no need to complain about returning an old device, when they are providing the latest model without any charge. As per Vonage terms, in fact, they should actually charge 79.99 for sending a new device , since the old one was out of warranty.

It was the phone port that was flaking out, not the entire router (at the time). Up until yesterday, the ethernet ports were functioning fine and showed no trouble. The tables have now turned and the device is almost dead.

Oh I'd even wonder about it being a canned response. Since the rep isn't likely responsible to decide which adapters they need back under what circumstances they want the return, I'd suspect that general policy would be just to request the return of all units when they replace it.

I guess it's be frustrating blowing a little postage on sending the dead unit back, but hey you did get a replacement. If they are going to charge you without the return make sure you do get a tracking number when you do return.

Yes, it's all canned responses, over two days I've gotten the same responses back three times. Frustrating to say the least.

But they're also offering to ship it back for free as well. If it wasn't for the fact that I was actually interested in keeping it (when it was functional) then I'd have had no complaints at all. Free replacement, free shipping to return the old device. But it does me no good to argue for a product which actually is dead now vs. a product that was previously functional but useless to anybody else but me.

I'll call them in the morning to request they send me a shipping label (don't have a printer right now, so I can't print it myself). Now if I can find the original box they shipped it in...
