Post subject: Background Noise Victims look here
I like many others have had this issue and read the various fixes for it and came up with a very simple one.

Just take a wire and short the two center pins. This does the same thing as an off hook phone will do basically and is much easier to get along with.

is sending me a new Linksys device to but Im not hopeful it is fixed until I see it.

Might want to be careful this doesn't short the circuitry inside the adapter. An off-hook phone has approximately 50K ohms resistance across the wires. I took a couple of RJ-11 plugs and crimped in a 22k ohm resistor to short the terminals. It killed some of the noise, but not as much as an off-hook phone. Also tried it with 44k ohms with basically the same results as 22k. It makes the background noise "tolerable" but I'm still holding my breath for a permanent fix to be released.
For what it's worth.....

I tried several phones and each of them put out around 71k Worth of resistances when they went offhook.
I also spook to various telecom people who advised me that just crossing the two pins is an easier approach.

Just crimped on a RJ-11 with pins 3 and 4 shorted and ALL noise is now gone. Hopefully it doesn't mess something else up though. Thanks for the post!

So where do you stick the RJ-11? In port 2 of the router?

Yes, in port 2. I do not see how it can possibly mess anything up. Its just a simple short as if you went off hook.

Just make sure you don't short out any of the RJ-45 ports!

Since I don't have a crimper I guess I could take an old phone cord and twiss the two middle wire together.

Sweet! ...probably causes a voltage drop across some key circuits that are the noise makers. I'm still hesitant to create a dead short across a device that expects to see a fat 50,000 ohms of resistance.
It will be interesting to see whether the adapters hold up long-term using this trick without a resistor.
