I have heard that you also need to take the LINE 2 phone off the hook, and leave it off.

Did you try that?

Also make sure your phone line is not running along side of any power cords, surge protectors ect. If you have to cross over a power cord make sure it is done at a 90 degree angle. I had a noise even with the "short" in place and when I moved the phone cord away from any possible interference it cleared most of the hiss.

Worth a try.

P.S. Still have echos/repeats on incoming calls........... Rolling Eyes

I plugged in a telephone line tester into the Linksys router and it indicated reverse polarity in both the number 1 and 2 phone jacks.

Would the polarity reversal be a problem?

I tried plugging in a phone on jack number 2 and leaving it off the hook and the line noise remained the same.

Very accurate description of the sound as a low level phaser. I was trying to figure out how to convey to people what to me sounded like a stream of electrons (if it was possible to hear them).

I'm all set to sign up a bunch of friends and family but this issue...

As for me, the phone off hook and the homemade short haven't worked. BUT I also haven't powered down or a done a router reset yet either. If, after doing those 2 things, I get silence I'll update this post.

Haven't called customer service-this forum has scared me-just sent them an email. But otherwise up and running within 1 week of ordering, that includes having number ported. Only other minor things are the kinda loud volume (I suppose that's better than vol being too low) and trying to find the right configuration to get rid of choppy or dropped sound. (50 on bandwidth saver and all QoS's off altogether)

Looks like I have to make a plug up for the second port on my router. The phone off hook solution has worked well for me. But now Vonage has added a recording explaining that the phone is plugged into the wrong port and then starts the infernal beeping of a phone off hook. Dont these clowns know that thousands of us have off hook phones in these ports because they wont fix the static problem.

It doesn't do this on the Motorola VT1005 adapter. It's just dead silence. The Motorola adapter didn't have a noise problem.

Maybe this recorded voice resolves the static noise problem? There could be a method to their madness.
