You leave it in permanently until you know that Vonage needs to update your config with a modification or firmware.

If you know you need an update take it out and call from work or something like I do. When you get home verify it has been done then place it back in the port.

All will be good.

I take it you need an incoming call to trigger the update? If so you might try using Click2Call to place a call. It generates an incoming call before placing the outgoing call.

You can easily do a Click2Call just by typing the URL in your web browser, and you can create a shortcut for future use.

Every modification or firmware upgrade Ive gotten to this point has been manually initiated by me. I knew the Rj-11 caused problems with the updgrade or adjustment when the Technician told me are you sure you rebooted your router.

At this point I pulled it out and I heard him say that it just took. So from now on as I find out new firmware is available I will just pull it out on the way to work and then call when I get in.

Im going to request a new unit once Im sure they are shipping non defective ones.

I have been reading about this noise problem ever since Vonage started shipping the LinkSys adapters.

Vonage must know about this situation by now?

What I do not understand, is why is Vonage continuing to send out these adapters? I was one of the lucky ones and received a Motorola ATA. My friends just received their adapter as recently as last week, and it's a LinkSys. What do you know, they have noise and I have heard it. It's like a low-grade buzz on their line. It could be very annoying if you were on a long call. It gives the illusion that you are using a crappy telephone. If the Motorola adapters are not causing these problems, is there any reason why Vonage cannot distribute the Motorola equipment once more? It only makes sense.

I feel bad because I recommended Vonage to these guys, and they are disappointed with the sound quality. They are not sure at this point if they will stay with Vonage. I am not sure that I will recommend Vonage to anyone again unless I find out that this issue has finally been resolved.

It may be because they are signed on a reseller of linksys, and also because they have the mass provisioning tools for them as well. They may wish to standardize... I dunno...

Nothing wrong with that at all but they should do some quality testing before thousands of defective units have made it into our hands.

Apparently there was a breakdown in their quality area. Besides that my service is fantastic.

It does not make sense with all of the competition cropping up that they would knowingly send out faulty units to people.

This is most people's first introduction to Voip. They should not be scared off. Rolling Eyes

Yeah I wholeheartedly agree with DarKev.

I work for a huge company in the group that sets the firmwide standards for PCs. We evaluate which vendor, model, specs of laptop/desktop gets approved for use, and our March laptop order from one particular vendor alone was about 2200 units.

Now there have been many times when a vendor realizes there's a potential problem with a product we've purchased, and it's always the vendor's responsibility to rectify that situation. Our procurement folks negotiate contracts that make sure our vendors support their products in cases like that.

Which is what I don't get about this situation with Vonage. There's no way Vonage doesn't have a similar contract with Linksys. In a case where there is clearly a defect affecting a large number of customers, Vonage really shouldn't be on the hook as much as Linksys. Although Vonage is the unfortunate middleman in that kind of a scenario.

But even beyond that, I hope Vonage is telling Linksys to figure out the problem, figure out which units are potentially affected, pull any of those units from stock, and then maybe even proactively replace any units that Vonage has already shipped to customers. With the kind of order volume that Vonage must be doing with Linksys, they've got to have enough pull to get most of that done.

I agree with you that would be the ideal case, but with the rapid growth of Voip I wonder if they are more focused on getting what units they can produce out to new customers and leaving in place whatever faulty units are in use or in stock until they get ahead on production.

Since not everyone is experiencing problems with the older units it even makes more since not to pull them if it would mean not having units to ship to new customers.

I am new to Vonage and received an RT31P2 adapter and have the loud background noise. I tried the trick with the phone cord in line 2 and it does not do anything. The noise is the same. Has anyone else had this happen or does the trick work for everyone that has tried it?
