I got 1.27.01 today and I still had the noise. Back in the RJ went. The Tech that did my firmware upgrade said it was a hardware issue and not correctable with firmware.

Hi: I have the Linksys RT31P2 and have loads of background noise on all phones. If I put an EM pickup coil near the adapter, this noise comes through the output of the coil. It sounds very much like processor EMI, and is quite loud.
This also occurs with my non-activated line2 port as well.
Is this the background noise being talked about on this topic?

I have not yet purchased a WRT54GP2 due to the many complaints about the "phaser" noise both here and on broadbandreports forums. Since I will be buying a NEW router I will not tolerate having to use the RJ11 fix nor going through multiple RMA's or retail returns.

Do we have confirmation that this hardware problem has been fixed and if so, what beginning serial number would signal the new batch?

The wife is again asking me to port her number back to the local RBOC (or maybe her cell phone and up the minutes) if I can't get the Vonage thing improved. From what I've read the WRT54GP2 does quite well with QoS, but the background noise is unacceptable.

Knowing what serial numbers signal the new "fixed" batch of routers so that I could find them locally would be greatly appreciated.

I too have been fighting this air noise. It was not unbearable but annoying. Too bad no one at Linksys or Vonage will admit to having a problem. Kudos to those who kept at it and prevailed. I plugged an old phone in to the unused port and, like magic, the noise disappeared. Maybe this will give the engineers a clue and they can fix this problem. I love the Vonage Voip and as long as the noise is gone my whole family is happy. Smile

I'm new to Vonage but very familiar with the operation of phone ports.

In reality an off hook phone is in the ball park of 400 ohms and sinks around 25 mA of current. ASSUMING the internal circuit is current limited, then shorting the pins on port 2 should not be a problem. However the more conservative user might want to place anywhere between 200 ohms and 600 ohms across port 2 instead of a dead short. Pay attention to the resistor power rating - you'll need to figure that out for yourself.

For those of you who measured the off hook phone as 50kohm and higher, please note. I stated that an off hook phone looks like 400 ohms WHEN IT SINKS APPROX 25 MA. It's an active load and needs to be powered.

best of luck!

I just discovered the first "fatality" of the shorting of port 2 to solve the background noise. Settings you make in the dashboard such as "Bandwidth Saver" and such that need to go to the ATA *WILL NOT BE UPDATED*. The ATA just sits there and keeps trying to make a connection to atlas.vonage.com and register over and over and over again and never makes it.

Just wanted to make everyone aware of this.

Dumb question, but here it goes. Do you leave the RJ-11 inside the port?or is this a one time deal?

You leave it in permanently until you know that Vonage needs to update your config with a modification or firmware.

If you know you need an update take it out and call from work or something like I do. When you get home verify it has been done then place it back in the port.

All will be good.
