I have been with out phone service since 12/02/08. Since switching to Vonage, I have no phone, no dial tone, no DSL. Still waiting for them to release my phone number back to ATT. They informed me Vonage service would not work with my DSL AFTER switching my phone service leaving me phoneless and with no internet. We cannot call 911 if we need to. My friends used to have Vonage, the sound quality was horrible. Very choppy and cut off. Customer service compares to Charter. Need I say more?

WEIRD!!!! Rolling Eyes

I guess your DSL was disconnected. . . so sorry for you!

Vonage works over the internet . . . and requires a broadband connection. You obviously do not have one or the other.

Choppy and cut off Voip is a result of a poor internet serivice that you would probably not be aware of using email or normal web browsing. Your freind, like you, is being ripped off by your internet provider.

But it is soooo much easier to blame Vonage!

Well, if you don't have Internet service, that would probably explain why you have no dial tone from Vonage. Vonage requires an active broadband Internet service, which it does not sell. You have to have this BEFORE you order Vonage and install the equipment.

Try re-establishing your DSL Internet service first, and that should fix your problem. If it does not, THEN feel free to come back here and explain the situation, and you may be able to receive some help in diagnosing and resolving the issue.

Sounds like you ported your number from AT&T to Vonage using a phone number that hosted an active DSL connection or you signed up for Vonage and canceled your AT&T line. In either case I do not see how Vonage is to blame.

If you did port your number, when the request to release your line came to At&T, they should have rejected the order due to DSL on the line. That's how it is supposed to work. So if anyone is to blame, it would be AT&T. This is also posted on Vonage and the internet so that people understand that porting numbers from active DSL lines could result in loss of internet and phone which is why you either need a Dry Loop DSL connection setup before the port, a different line to host the DSL service, or another method of internet. So this is partially your fault for not understanding what is required for Vonage to work and what happens if you port a number on an active DSL connection.

Vonage works perfectly fine with DSL. In fact, I'm using it right now.

As VonTechMgr said, AT&T should have either rejected the port request (there is a specific rejection code for line-shared DSL) OR converted your DSL connection to be dry loop automaticlly.

It seems that many of the folks at AT&T either don't know about their procedures for ordering dry loop DSL or play dumb about it. I found this info on another website which may be useful to you:

Step 1: Call 1-800-264-0002.
Step 2: Ignore the automated messages. Do not do anything until it asks what state you are in.
Step 3: Say what state you're in. You should be transfered to a person who can help you make the switch.

I have also found information suggesting that you need to call up and specificlly as for "bundle 97" which is the inside-lingo for the basic dry loop DSL (upon which you can add faster speeds).

Vonage should have told me I would have to keep my land line. If I am to keep my land line, why in the heck would I need Vonage? Vonage doesn't have a clue. Oh yeah and Vonage cancelled my land line, not I. Vonage knew what ISP I have and what type of phone service I had and they went ahead with the order knowing it wasn't going to work after they cancelled my ATT land line. So yes, Vonage is to blame for leaving me without a phone. By the way, I'm still waiting!

Thanks trekologer and vontechmgr for your advice, your replies are the only ones that make any sense in getting my particular issue resolved. Everyone else here just wants to insult me. As I said, Vonage customer service compares to Charter!

Why didn't Vonage take care of that for me? I was told that I did not need to contact ATT and everything would be taken care of for me. I guess no one here understands why I am upset about this?

The answer is that they shouldn't need to do anything. AT&T should have converted your DSL to dry loop themselves, automaticlly.

As was pointed out, the problem here was caused by AT&T, not Vonage. You should be upset with AT&T.

As I pointed out, Vonage told me I didn't have to do anything and I would be set up. I am not set up and I have no telephone, no internet. Vonage did cause the problem by telling me everything would be taken care of and then leaving me without a phone.
