I've been with Vonage since Oct 2004. Things have been good until these past 5-6 months where call quality has really gone downhill, specifically the static. Tried EVERYTHING (even with Vonage Support's help) and nothing works, that only leaves replacing my 4+ year old Linksys PAP2 (v1).
The tech I was on the phone with offered a new v-portal for $30, but said it would invoke a new agreement and that if I cancel in the first year I would be charged the $50 disconnect fee.
I'd rather not be tied down to Vonage as I've been thinking of switching to another provider, so I'm wondering my options are at this point.
If I buy a used adapter off eBay and call Vonage to switch from my old adapter to this 'new to me' one, would that incur a new agreement? |

No, buying your own TA will not do that.
However, if you are going to go the eBay "new to you" route, make sure that the seller will guarantee that you can activate the TA and that it works. Often un-activatable TA's (balance owed on a closed account, still on someone else's account, reported stolen, etc) find their way onto eBay, along with ones that just plain don't work.
A suggestion that I can make is if you have a Circuit City near you that is closing, check that out. One near me had Vonage devices starting at $15. This was before Thanksgiving so the stores may have been picked clean by now though. |

As mentioned in the previous post, I also do not recommend purchasing a telephone adapter from EBAY unless the seller has it listed and Brand New. A used adapter could have technical issue or it could still be tied to an account with an unpaid balance. If it is still tied to an account with an unpaid balance or on a Suspended account, Vonage cannot activate this for you.
If you want to get one, try a retail store. Even at that point, you may still get one off the shelf that was returned and could have technical issues or have an unpaid balance associated with it. But at least you can return it and pick up a different one.
You do not have to contact Vonage to get this activated either. If you buy a Vonage branded device yourself, as long as it is not associated with any other account, you can just activate it yourself. Go to http://www.vonage.com/retail_subscribe/ . Chose the Option for Current Customer Login, enter the MAC address from the new device and continue through the prompts. This will add the device to the account and move your phone number to it. Connect it up to the internet and let it sit for a few minutes until it has download it's profile and firmware. |
