recently i have bought 2 Vonage accounts, one for me and one for my girlfriend in the UK. my Vonage hone wont dial to her international phone # and it is enabled, and nobod at Vonage can help me.
so i bought her an account, with a local rhode island telephone number, and sent it to her. i bought her the linksys WRT54GP2 wireless G router. she plugged in the ethernet cables right.
modem - > internet in on linksys router
ethernet port 1 - > computer ethernet
phone line 1 - > phone.
we had a problem with the phone cord ends not matching up, but we the right adapter. when i call her it goes directly to her voicemail, and when she picks up the phone there is no dialtone. but her internet does work when she has all the ethernet cables plugged in, so the router is not defective. i tested it before i sent it to her as well.

what could be wrong?!
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks much,
Jesse Armstrong

hmm...it sounds like her isp is blocking vonage's ports. she does have broadband right? this lists the ports Vonage uses. not sure if her isp is willing to open them up for her or not.
http://vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=89
and just to confirm...the cable/dsl/whatever modem is directly connected to the Vonage device right?

I'm not saying they block Voip, but they may block ports in general that happen to be used by Voip. I notice they offer dialup and broadband, she does have the broadband options right?
has she tried calling ntlworld?

yes, she has broadband. she called NTLworld and they said they didnt block it and it is legal to use through their isp.
she called vonage.co.uk and they said that it may be defective. however i tried it a week ago and it worked, and then sent it to her in the UK. i doubt its defective, and when she tries to put that 192.165.1.1 into explorer, it doesnt load anything. page can not be displayed. even when i do it too.
so there must be some sort of problem with Vonage being able to go out over the ISP. but im not sure how to fix it.

You should have subscribed to Vonage UK for the UK end - they would provide a Linksys router and resolve the technical problems otherwise no pay!

I agree with ayidth. seems like it would have been easier for her to do it there (heck she has to at least use an adaptor for the power supply since it came from the US). but regardless, are you sure that's the right IP to access that device? if the internet works, the device should be accessible from its IP.

i emailed linksys regarding the problem, so rather than type it all out again, here is what i wrote them, this should answer any questions, and perhaps shed some light on the problem

Hello I have having a bit of a problem with my linksys router.

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router With Voip, 802.11g,b
Mfr. Part #: WRT54GP2-CU
Brand: Vonage

I have ordered Vonage www.vonage.com or www.vonage.co.uk and I am trying to use this router to work with Vonage.
I live in Rhode island, united states, and I have bought this and set it up here. It worked, there was a dialtone, and everything was in working order.
I boxed it up and sent it to aldershot, UK, where my family is. After a few trial and error processes, we got the router to work, and it said that the router along with the 2 phone ports have been installed. But there is still no dial tone on her end. Her phone is us equipped and can plug into Vonage, and the router works for internet.
Her broadband ISP is NTL world. She called them and they said they allow Voip and they have not blocked anything through using it. So it SHOULD work.

Her modem is
NTLWORLD 08004eu
for some reason her modem requires that usb and Ethernet be plugged in at the same time. Without the usb plug going from the modem to her computer, the internet will not work. I have never heard of anything like this.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesse

one more thing to try especially if it involved a wireless router. shut everything down: computer, modem, router (pull out the power lead) etc.
then one by one, plug the leads back in starting with the modem, then the router (wait a minute or two before plugging each one back in), the wait another minute and power up the PC. you should see the various flashing lights on the router specifically one green light for phone and one for internet.

and, one more thing. where did you buy the adapter for the phone? the Vonage uk kit is supplied with a dongle that converts a UK phone RJ45 into the US RJ11 port. sometime adapters that are sold in places like radio shack and tandy dont work.

and even one more thing to test. make sure she is using a correct voltage converter with the US router since there might not be enough power. you need to buy one of those hefty voltage converters. i used to have a Vonage unit from the US and i needed one of those to power the router and it worked fine
