I plugged everything in. Ethernet lights light. LCDs say the box is trying to connect to the Internet --- which fails, error code 002. I see a MAC address on the bottom of the box. Does the box ask the ISP for a DHCP address? I have COMCAST Cable and they require MAC address registration before they hand out IPs. So, does the box request DHCP service requiring me to register it with COMCAST? Tnx.

I guess all the other geeks are off line. The answer is yes. The V-Portal box does in fact request DHCP service from the Internet side of the house. I had to get COMCAST to allow a second DHCP supplied IP. Also, it seems the V-Portal is a single port router also giving DHCP to the house side of itself.

Did Comcast charge for the ability to get a second iP address from the cable modem?

You only needed to clone the MAC of whatever piece of equipment your modem was hooked up to. Not difficult and there are settings on the Vportal to do that. I hope you didn't pay comcast for a second IP cause there is no need.

There is an easier way to do it. You don't have to call comcast. Just follow these steps and it will probably solve you problem:
1) Connect your network as follow : Comcast Modem -> V-Portal -> Your router (IF you have one) -> PC
2) you have to power cycle your entier network: unplug power from all devices. unscrew cable cord from comcast modem and leave it for 3 mins (If your modem has a backup battery you have to take it out. Cable modem has to be completely dead)
3) After powering up your whole network start by screwing in the cable cord to comcast modem first then plug the power to the comcast modem first ONLY
4) wait till the Cable/Online light is solid green on the modem.
5) plug the power to the Vonage V-portal and wait till it say " Ready to make calls"
6) Plug power to your router if you have one and wait till the internet light is solid green
7) start your computer.

Usually comcast will clear the MAC address table if you power down the modem for more than 3 mins.
Try these steps and 90% it will work and you won't have to call comcast.
