PostPosted: Tue Dec 02, 2008 6:23 pm    Post subject: A Naked DSL Disaster Reply with quote Back to top

Hey folks. Last week a naked dsl company reconnected my service after disconnecting it two months ago. I'm a university student and that was during thanksgiving break, so I didn't get to test it until last Friday. Suffice to say, I didn't have a connection.

Three disputes over the problem were resolved into one dispute: The problem is the writing between my phone jack and the telecommunicaitons box. basically there's no red and green wires attached to the leads of apartment's jack. The DSL company says: The apartment has to do it. The apartment says: Verizon messed it up(they disconnected the service originally) so they should fix it. Verizion says: The DSL company should fix it.

The apartment manager (university apartment) said I could fix it. I found a designation "JB(or JP) 102" that corresponds to my apartment, but nobody seems to know which of the grey wires(with the red/green leads) corresponds to my apartment. I also don't know how to pop the plastic protectors off of my apartment's leads once I located the right wire.

So all of this is meant to ask 3 questions:

1. Any guesses as to how I locate a wire to my apartment where it isn't clearly marked? I'll note again that this is naked DSL, so there's not going to be a dialtone.

2. Once I've located it (I have express/written permission to strip the wire and connect it to my apartment), how do I pop the plastic protector closing the leads?

Honestly, any tentative guesses, ideas, or suggestions that allow me to try and solve the problem myself are appreciated. The three parties are all posturing, and I'll deal with them individually in due time. Right now, I just need to get this problem solved. I'm a grad student approaching finals week. That's my first priority.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

Don't worry about the plastic connectors. Cut the wire as close as possible to the connector, strip the insulation from the cut end of the wire, and splice it to the DSL service wire at the network interface.

If you're not sure which wire comes into the phone room from your apartment, there is a tool for that. It consists of two parts: a tone source and a probe. Plug the tone source into a telephone jack in your apartment. Take the probe to the phone closet and feel around. When the probe is near your cable, you'll hear the tone. Before you go and spend money on this tool, ask around. Any phone technician should have one in his or her toolbox.
