Good day,

Over the last several months I've been having an increasing number of dropped calls, interrupted service and horrible audio quality.

I've contacted my ISP provider and they mentioned that the router firewall could be turned off and this could increase the quality as it would allow more bandwidth to be used.

Speed tests have averaged:
Download :: 265 Kbps or 0.27 Mbps (32 kB/s)
Upload :: 191 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps (23 kB/s)

I'm using VTA ver#: 11.4.1r060815-1.00.09-r70401.img
Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware (according to google searches you cannot disable the firewall).

I have forwarded the ports 5060, 5061 and 10000-20000.

I have setup QoS to recognize the mac address of the VTA and that is set with highest priorities.

That being said, I still have issues when making calls.

If anyone knows where we could start troubleshooting this the help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe,

Post the details of the speed test results. Click on the Advanced Tab and include all of the statistics.

Also include the following information as noted in this post:

I really don't think the GL router w/ Tomato is the problem. I use this and my connection speeds are fine. This is a common router/firmware that people here use.

Let's see the details and then hopefully we can give you some ideas.

Hey Butterman,

I agree that the router/firmware are common setup; I'm uncertain where else to start looking to fix the issue. I appreciate the assistance!

Here's the info requested:
Is there a way to get screenshots onto the board? While you're looking at this info perhaps some screenshots of the firmware might indicate a wrong setup.?.

1. We're located outside Edmonton, Alberta

2. Our ISP is AlbertaCom and type is wireless

3. Upload and download speeds:
These numbers seem to vary considerably on each test run:
Download: 1043 (Kbps)
Upload: 175 (Kbps)

4. Not sure of the modem make/model as the line is direct from the satellite and plugs into the router.

5. Type of Vonage adapter = VTA

6. Setup of Network ie Satellite --> Router --> VTA

7. The major issue is choppy audio. We can hear the other party without a problem but they cannot hear us. Especially if any downloads are occurring.

8. I ran the test twice and this is the better of the two:

Quality of service: 81 %

Average download pause: 23 ms

Ahh, its starting to make more sense now.

Vonage over wireless can be problematic. I'm assuming this is actual wireless and not a satellite connection, correct?

Do you know what speed you are supposed to get from your ISP?

The choppy audio is probably caused by 2 things, one you can help, the other, not so much.

1. The high latency of the wireless connection. You really can't do much about this

2. Give higher priority on your network to your Vonage device. In Tomato you need to setup QoS and assign the Vonage device as the highest so that it gets the bandwidth it needs at all times.

Hopefully this will help, but you should realize that with the wireless connection I can't say that the connection will ever be great, just due to the time it takes for the wireless connection to get where its going.

Let me know how you make out setting up QoS.
