If I have a laptop connected to a network wirelessly, is there a way to connect the adapter to my laptop for it to connect to Vonage? I plugged it in my laptop's Ethernet port but it did not work.

well i hope you did the basic stuff first, but if not, here it is:

1. get into the CONTROL PANEL (via the START MENU)
2. go to NETWORK CONNECTIONS
3. make sure there is a LAN CONNECTION (ETHERNET CONNECTION)
4. make sure it is ENABLED by RIGHT-CLICKING and selecting ENABLE (if it is currently disabled, the word ENABLE will be there. vice-versa)

once you plug the ethernet cable from the Vonage (yellow?) port and to your computer, it should aquire a valid IP address. you can check it by going into the command prompt (START MENU, RUN, type COMMAND or CMD) then once the prompt appears type: IPCONFIG/ALL

this will tell you the IP and MAC addresses of your laptop network connections

i would also disable your wireless card via the NETWORK CONNECTIONS in the control panel as well...just so it isnt automatically connecting to your wireless router and interferring.

reboot your computer a time or two after making theses changes....it really is not that hard

PS. if your pulling a 169.... IP address it is not aquiring a connection. if this is happening, you need to shut you computer down and leave it off for about 60 seconds, UNPLUG EVERYTHING from the back of your cable & Vonage modems, and leave everything OFF and unplugged (EVERYTHING UNPLUGGED) for at least 60 seconds. Then plug everything back in and turn the laptop on. that should release and clear it all out for ya.

You may also have to adjust your firewall settings

liek ed56 said, check your firewall prog if you have one running. if you are just using the WINDOWS FIREWALL it should be fine as long as everything is at default settings.

My guess is this is not the right answer. I think the OP wants to use the laptop's wifi connection to run the adapter.

If that's the case, it can be done. I've done it before, but right now I don't remember how I did it. I'll give it some thought

In your laptop's control panel, under network connections, enable both the wireless and the ethernet ports. Then enable IP forwarding. configure the wireless port to get an IP address automatically. You'll be using the laptop as a router to pass IP through to the ATA.

I know there are a couple ways that work.

I remember enabling sharing on the wifi connection, and then creating a network bridge between the wired connection and wireless connection. I've used this method most recently.

I've used that one most recently. I remember setting it up once without the bridge, but that was a few years ago, so I'd have to do some playing.
