Which, if you had Roadrunner + Digital cable + Voip is roughly the same price. Now the challenge for me, one which I think is insurmountable, is to convince the powers that be to give up their existing email address.

Be careful of cable bundles, they are usualy for a certain periodof time, after which the price can (and probably does) go up.

On the other hand, you are locked in for the price (and the service) for the contract period.

Some RoadRunner customers are also finding that by agreeing to this new Triple Play package that they're going to be bound by a stupidly low bandwidth cap as well. BE VERY CAREFUL

T+W allows you to cancel at any time. And yes their rates are all over the lot. So too is Vonage it seems.

Depends on the Plan. I do not have their digital phone, but was paying close to $130.00 per month for High Speed Internet and Digital Cable, HD Tier and Sports Tier.

I noticed some ads that seemed cheaper than I was paying so I called and was able to upgrade my internet speed, keep everything else the same and save around $20-30 per month, but required a two year contract.

Of course you can cancel at anytime. But if you sign up for the Triple Play package you are binding yourself to a two year service agreement, and there is a cancellation fee built into it that is based on how far into the contract you cancel.

They can't stop you from canceling, but they can penalize you for it.

Not that we don't know this already, but since I said I would post it I feel obligated to do so. I got the email on the same day I got my monthly bill. Here is the paragraph about the increase.

At Vonage, we're committed to providing exceptional phone service at a great value you can rely on. On December 1, 2008, the price of our Residential Basic 500 Minute Plan increased from $14.99 to $17.991. The new price will be reflected in your February 2009 bill. We're proud that we remain one of the most competitive choices among home phone providers.[color=blue]

I have been with Vonage since 2005. For a long time I felt it supplied me with reliable, low cost service. Prior to Vonage, I was using Bell South. Now, my cell provider, t-mobile is offering Voip for just $10 if you already have t-mobile. MagicJack (www.magicjack.com ) has improved its service, and is much, much cheaper than Vonage. I was using Vonage, in large part because I could get a dedicated fax line with it, but if I get some efax type service, I may just leave Vonage. I paid for a year in advance, but when that comes to an end, I might switch to t-mobile. Does anyone see a reason to stay with Vonage?

It is really hard to beat TMobile @Home if you already have their cellular service. I haven't heard much about it but the few reviews I have heard were very positive. In that case I can see very little incentive to stick with Vonage unless they start offering a special $10/mo unlimited package to retain those customers, and I just can't see them doing it. TMobile can quite easily eat the cost on this in order to retain current customers and bring back customers from competitors.

MagicJack is nice, but it's major drawback IMO is that it is entirely dependent on a Windows OS and the computer must remain on 24/7 in order to have 24/7 telephone service. That also makes MagicJack liable to any issues that creep up on your Windows PC, whether it be from the OS or other software that interferes. Again, if you have a cellphone, this might not be a major downside.

And if either of those services can provide you with quality fax service, then it is going to be especially difficult to convince yourself to stay with Vonage. But if you absolutely MUSt have a reliable fax service, and you're getting that with Vonage now, I'm not sure I'd want to risk that for an unknown. Although, in all honesty, the price is low enough that you can test out another service w/o giving up Vonage and compare for yourself.

The forum rules preclude one from comparing other services, per:

"The Vonage Forum is not a Voip comparison site.
Postings with comments regarding other Voip companies that are clearly off topic will be moderated at will"

So I will not comment on MJ, etc. I will comment on why I like Vonage and am not , at this time contemplating changing.

The reason is it is still a good value for the money compared to the POTS alternative. The features that I really like (beyond typical ones such as VM and three way conferencing), are Contact Book, call forwarding if internet connection is down, and Vonage Talk are generally not ALL available by any other Voip providers. I have found the stability of the connection and call quality is excellent. In short Vonage has already gone through their growing pains and now is stable. As others grow, they will have their problems. If they do not grow, they may go the way of SunRocket.

That being said, in about a year my cell phone service contract will come to an end, and I will explore my options regarding cell phones and how one could leverage home phone service in conjunction with them. Who knows, the best combined deal may be my POTS or new cell phone provider.

As a continuation of what I am looking for,

A "landline", probably Voip, that is integrated with my cell phone, so that it allows me to use my cell phone over a LAN (minutes covered by my Voip service), a cost effective wireless broadband for my laptop (the $59.00/month I currently pay is too high), and lastly PC client applications like Vonage talk and contact book to use my Voip service as I currently do with Vonage.

This may be via one provider or by a combination of providers with a smart phone like the IPhone or Blackberry, with a Voip client application.

With the number of industry wireless lines remaining static (and possiibly falling in 2009), the competion and innovation MAY drive these options. There are already a number of service providers providing some Voip over the Balckberry and IPhone, but implementatiions vary, and seems to be focused on International calls.

Personally I think Vonage has a GREAT opportunity here, but I really am not up to date with the roadblocks that probably exist.
