PostPosted: Thu Nov 27, 2008 7:43 pm    Post subject: International Charges to UK Reply with quote Back to top

Recently my girlfriend's family moved to the UK. And found out that Vonage allowed free calls. So I got it, but noticed that is only for landline and not the cell phones. So I'm kinda screwed that I can only talk to her when she calls me on weekends when she can call here for free.

I talked to the sales agent, and s/he (cannot remember which). Told me that Vonage doesn't have an unlimited plan for cell phones since the stupid UK cell companies doesn't have a agreement with Vonage. Will this ever happen? Or will it only be landlines forever?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Not sure about the UK, but in Italy, if one calls a cellphone weither from within country or outside country, they pay the cell minutes May be the same as the UK.

I doubt that it will ever happen. Only calls to landlines will be free to other countries. What you have to understand is that the entire world except the USA, China and a couple other Asian countries, all use a different cell system. They are GSM "caller pays" systems. Even someone living in the UK will be charged to call a UK cellular phone from a landline. So it doesn't seem possible that you could call a UK cellular from the USA for free. She needs to talk her family into getting a landline.

Also, Vonage does have the V-access system which allows callers from other countries(and the USA) to dial a local number and then connect to a Vonage line. If it doesn't cost her to call a V-access number from her cell, maybe she could call you that way. You'll have to check if there is a local access number for her to call and if the cost is reasonable for her.

Thank you. Now I hope her vodafone doesn't charge her. And that is messed up how countries have cell phone systems like that. I wish they were more like us. Especially with text messaging which is a pain in the butt unlike with the US cell companies texting >.<

Here in Canada if I call a cell phone from my cell phone we are both charged against our minutes. If I receive a long distance call on my cell phone then I am also charged that fee.

I travel to Europe all the time and I have an unlocked cell phone for that purpose. I put in a Sim card for that company and call back home really cheap. In the U.K I paid something like 4 or 6 pence a minute. Since she has Vodaphone she is going to pay through the nose to call back to the U.S on a cell phone, been there and done that once! But if she calls on the cell phone using the V-Access number is should be fairly cheap.

Well she told me she could call me on the weekends for free because of credits or something like that. I have no idea though. Man this **** trying to have a long distance relationship when she can't afford a house phone right now >.<

If she has broadband Internet access in the UK, get her a Vonage phone, even one with a U.S. number. Vonage-to-Vonage calls are free, no matter where the far end is!

There is a one hour limit, they have to call back. I think if you called a number on your Vonage line it has the same time limit
