Hi everyone,
I am computer illiterate !!!!!!
I have cable which goes to a cable box, this then hooks up to a router. From the router, one lead connects to the Vonage box (where I have 2 phone lines with US numbers, although I am in Buenos Aires) and the second lead to the PC.
If I have all this connected, neither telephone lines or the computer internet work.
If I connect the cable only to the Vonage bx - the telephone lines work
If I connect only the cable to PC - the internet sometimes works and sometimes doesnt.
I have asked several people what the problem could be and so far all that has happened is I get confused faces staring back at me!
Someone did tell me, that maybe the router wasnt configured to deal with 2 things, the pc and Vonage bx. However since I cant get connected to the computer today to fix that, I dont know.
Is this a problem for my internet cable provider? I was thinking since the connection does work for the Vonage, that is not the case. The PC is new and is fully configued for internet etc.
Anyone who can help..... please answer to this thread
Much appreciated Sian

If you would post all items asked for in the "sticky" at the top of the forum, it would be easier to help.
What brand and model of cable modem do you have? Have you tried hooking the Vonage device between the cable modem and the router? |

It would really help to know the brand and model numbers of your devices. Router, modem and Vonage device. When you hook up only the modem to the Vonage box, do your phone lines always work? Good quality and constant connection or is it like your computer? Sometimes yes and sometimes no? Are you using anything wireless? |

Not sure of your internet service provider, but sometimes they will register your MAC address. Try cloning your MAC address from the Vonage device (since that is what works) to the router. Then connect as originally described in your post. |

CABLE MODEM >> WIRELESS ROUTER >> COMPUTER + Vonage ADAPTER
Your router should have at least 4 ethernet output ports. It doesnt matter which of the 4 you plug the computer or Vonage adapter into. For instructional purposes, just plug the computer into port #1 on the router and Vonage adapter into port #2.
ONCE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING PHYSICALLY CONNECTED together correctly, powercycle/hard-reset all three devices by simply ungplugging the power cords and plugging them right back in. All three devices will sync up together. The Vonage adapter will give you a connection error for about 60-120 seconds and then will realize it has a valid connection and go to normal status.
IMPORTANT: Depending on you cable internet provider, you may or may not need to set IP addresses of your devices. I would first try with everything set to AUTOMATIC DHCP. DO NOT CONFIGURE ANYTHING WITH THE PC, MODEM, OR ROUTER. LEAVE ALL AT DEFAULT SETTINGS (unless you want to change the SSID or WEP/WPA..that wouldn't matter).
AND REMEMBER: Your Vonage connection is only as good as your broadband connection. Crappy internet installation/connection also = crappy Vonage. -- SO DONT BLAME Vonage FOR YOUR ISP's crap service/installation.
hope you get it going. |
