I currently have 3.0 Mbps/768K with Verizon. I'm thinking about getting Comcast's 6 Mbps plan. I think the upload speed is slower with Comcast though. Will I have any problems?

you shouldn't have any issues. you really only need 90kbps upload speed wise using Vonage. this is assuming that you also set the bandwidth saver to the highest setting. I always keep mine at 50 kbps and it seems to reduce any lag or breakup of the voice.

so even with the minimal 384, you should be in great shape unless you use a ton of P2P stuff. Then you need to be concerned about your upload bandwidth.

Vonage claims that you only need 90k of bandwidth. It actually depends upon how many lines you have. If you're using both phone ports at the same time, you're using 180k. If both of those calls are 3-way conference calls, you're using 360k. If you have multiple Vonage devices and you're using more than two lines... well, you get the picture.

Thanks for the replies.
I called Comcast and they are too expensive. They don't have the $19.99 plan for new customers and they would charge $100 install it. I think I'm going to stay with my Verizon DSL.

Huh? All but the Economy tier of Comcast's speed tiers are higher than 768k. There's Performance @ 6000/1000, Performance Plus @ 8,000/2000, and many parts have Blast which is 16000/2000. I think Economy is 768k/384k

Just as and FYI, not all of those plans are available in all Comcasts areas. The 'cheap' plan is 384kbps up/6000kbps down and the higher priced plan gives you 768kbs up/8000kbps down.

I'm at a house that has Comcast and the Quality of Service is 20% according to the speed test on this site. At my house with Verizon DSL my Quality of Service is 99%. Does that mean that the Vonage quality is going to be different?

No. I performed a speed test on the DSL by AT&T when at work and they get scores higher than 80% most of the time. Cable internet is shared (DSL is also) and fluctuates more than that of a more stable DSL. The fluctuations is not noticeable with Vonage (unless you have connection issues) because Vonage only needs about 90k of bandwidth to produce good quality phonecalls.

Here is my results and I never have any call issues:

Upload speed: 6257376 bps

Earlier this year Comcast raised the upload caps from the 384k of performance up to 1meg, and increased 768k of performance plus up to 2meg. Currently parts of Minnesota and Massachusetts are getting upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 which allows the increased speed packages of "Extreme 50" which consists of speed up to 50meg down and 10 meg up, and another package of 22meg down and 5meg up. The current 6000/1000 "Silver tier a.k.a Performance" will be increased to 12/2 and the 8000/2000 "Gold Tier a.k.a Performance plus" will be increased to 16000/2000. People who have Blast will get no upgrade and will probably downgrade to the standard Gold tier. AS the year ends and 2009 begins Comcast will be deploying DOCSIS 3.0 all across the U.S
