I got the vonage phone adapter 2 days ago and i still cannot get it to work. I have broadband through comcast and iu have a regular cable modem with them.
I connect the cable from the comcast box to thhe back of the phone adapter. Turn on the power on the adapter and then gets as far as trying to obtain an ip address. Then i get the error message code 002, check if your internet connection is working. I then unplug the cable from the adapter into my linksys router and internet works fine on my laptop, connecting wirelessly.
Then i try the connection again and again the same error message. At this point i do not have my linksys router connected. I just have my comcast cable modem connected.
Now my question is when i connect directly to my comcast modem i get the real ip address, dns settings etc. Do i have to put thse settings into my vonage phone adapter or should it obtain an ip address automatically. I contacted comcast and they said that there is no problem with their cable modem and most people have no issues connecting to vonage via comcast.
I havent had time to contact vonage via the help number, do they have an email address. Can anyone help and tell me what i am doing wrong. |

some modems actually record the MAC address of the device that follows it. So what I think is happening is that your modem has remembered your linksys router's MAC address and so when you swapped, the modem did not recognize it.
The first step in installing a new device like a router is to first turn off everything including the modem for at least 5 mins. Then power up the modem, wait until all the lights are solid. Then connect your vonage device and power that up.
now everything should work. |

Did you power off your cable modem before connecting the Vonage device to it? The cable company will only allow you to use 1 IP address at a time and the modem associates it with the MAC address of the router that was previously connected to it. Powering down for 30 seconds or so the modem clears its memory of the router's MAC address. If you have a modem with a battery backup, you would need to remove the battery as well. |
