Hello! I am new customer and have tried activating a wireless network by VT2542 but I have only got a connection with speed 54Mbps. I have read any posts and have found additional routers. Do I need to add a router?
My whole connection is external modem (ethernet and USB ports) + Motorola VT2542. Thank you |

54 Mps is typical for wireless 802.11.g. If you are looking for something faster, look at 802.11.N (see below for comparison:)
802.11B Release date: October 1999 Frequency band 2.4 GHz Data rate (typical)4.5 Mbit/s Data rate (maximum) 11 Mbit/s Range (indoor) ~38 m
802.11G Release date June 2003 Op. Frequency 2.4 GHz Net bit rate (Typ) 19 Mbit/s Net bit rate (Max) 54 Mbit/s Gross bit rate (Max) 72 Mbit/s Range (Indoor) ~38 m
802.11N Op. Frequency 5 GHz and/or 2.4 GHz Data rate (Typ) 74 Mbit/s Data rate (Max) 300 Mbit/s (2 streams) Range (Indoor) ~70 m |

ED56, I have reviewed in the device setup and there are only options for 802.11 mode: B, B+, G, G+ and Mixed. There is not the option N. Speed 54Mbps does not let getting Internet. so, could I configure any parameter in the device setup or I need an additional router to get Internet by wireless network?
Thank you for your help |

The wireless speed has nothing to do with your ability to access the internet, since the speed of your internet connection is usually slower than your wireless system.
To answe your question, I would pick "mixed mode" as this will allow computers with b or g to connect.
Now, why are you not able to connect to the internet.
go the the command prompt (start, run, the type "cmd" not the quotes) or go to programs, accessories and click on command prompt)
then type "ipconfig /all" (not the quotes)
Post here what you see under the listing for wireless network connection |

lylo,
In your first posting, you also mention the modem has both USB and Ethernet. While this is common for most cable modems, both the USB and Ethernet port cannot be used simultaneously unless your Internet service provider will provide you with more then one public IP address which most residential accounts will not do.
Please make sure you do NOT have the USB port going to a PC. If you do, this would not provide internet connectivity through the Ethernet port your connecting the VT2542 to. |

Also you failed to mention if your phone is working. I assumed it was. |

I would strongly consider looking at other options for a wireless router besides the Motorola VT2542. My experience as well as many others on this forum is that the Motorola VT2542 would loose the security settings and any other settings you configured for the device if you have to reboot the device or if you have a power outage. If you're still wanting to use the Motorola VT2542, you could place the VT2542 behind a good quality wireless router and use the VT2542 solely as a phone adapter. |

Hello Everybody,
Actually, I do not know much about networks, but the ethernet port is connected to VT2542 and USB port is connected to PC to get internet. The idea is to free of USB and get a Wireless conection.
The phone is working excellent.
ED56, I reviewed the parameters of wireless connection: Description: Intel <R> PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Physical Address: 001B-77-8D-23-4E Dhcp Enabled: Yes Auto configuration Enabled: Yes IP Address: 192.168.15.2 Sub net Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.15.1 DHCP Server: 192.168.15.1 DNS Server: 192.168.15.1
Thanks all of you |

The wireless looks fine, assigned a IP of 192.168.15.2, the VT2542 is 192.168.15.1
Usually, if you have two network connections active, only one will connect to the internet, the other being "local only".
Have you disconnected the USB from the PC, and ALSO disconnected and reconnected the wireless either through a reboot, or a physical switch on the PC (on some models) or by Function key and F11 (on some models)?
The wireless then will reconnect and should have internet (with the USB disconnected). |
