Post subject: Questions about Phone Number Portability
I have read several posts on the topic, but I still don't understand exactly how phone number portability works. I have ALLTEL local phone service where I live. They claim that my phone number is portable, but I have not found a single telephone company (landline or
Voip
) that will/can port my phone number. Why is this? What does the other telephone company have to do in order to port my number? Install new hardware and/or software?

they have to be "in" that area. so if they don't offer service in your area code, they can't port your number. at least that's my understanding. they rely on clec's for numbers. here is a general link on lnp:

also, packet8.net seems to offer more rate centers than any other provider. have you tried them?
