Howyadoin,

My calling center office uses 14 Vonage boxes, 1 for each two workstations, as each box drives two phones. They are set to 90Kbps transfer rate. All network wiring is home-run from the Vonage boxes to a patch bay, and from there to our Ethernet switches.

I was attempting to segregate all Vonage traffic onto one of our two Internet connections. This particular connection is a 4Mbps down / 10 Mbps up, static IP connection. This connection was tested to confirm these throughput numbers. The feed comes in through a Netgear WGR614 router, and from there goes to a 3Com 3C16471 24-port switch. There is also an 8-port Netgear FS108 switch downstream of the Netgear router.

When I moved everything on a quiet Sunday evening, there were no issues; all the Vonage boxes pulled IP addresses, all phones had dial tone, everything looked great. Monday morning, that all changed.

When people started using the phones, some, but not all, of the Vonage boxes started throwing "Vonage Register Error 204". Cycling power seemed to fix the problem for about 5 minutes, then it would recur. My temporary solution was to move the affected boxes to my other internet connection, which fixed the problem.

Any ideas? There shouldn't be any bandwidth issues based on my testing with the ISP, I would think. Are there any tricks to setting up the router? Would cutting the bandwidth to 50Kbps be a recommended first step? That bandwidth number is per phone connected to the box, is that correct?

Thanks in advance,

-Mark

The 204 message means both of your lines cannot successfully communicate with Vonage Servers - this is not an issue with bandwidth. This points to a possible networking issue - the way you have your switches and routers connected. I would recommend putting the Vonage devices on static IPs to eliminate any IP conflicts, esp when you have all these devices connected.

You should also consider that your router is probably not capable of handling this type of traffic.

I'm not talking about the pure bandwidth, but managing this many connections that are all active or most active since you note call center.

I'm not sure if you have PCs for each person, but if you do that only makes it worse.

I can't imagine a simple $40 consumer router like this can handle 14 devices all connected at once and routing all of the traffic, let alone 30+ if most people have PCs.

Your problem sounds load related which based on your description would point me to the router.

I'd be interested to see what others think, but this is my first though based on what you have described.

I suspect mbp2112 is using a commercial router, at least I hope so.

I tend to agree with Patti123, having to do with the IP (perhaps lease problems) or may be a DNS issue.

For me that's a cable modem problem. Typically it's some kind of non DNS error upstream. It's usually rectified by rebooting the cable modem and renewing the IP address out, on the router. Then reboot the TA.
