I have used the Vonage Portal VDV21-VD only through an ethernet connection in a hotel where i have worked for some time. I am home now and would like to continue to use the same line. I have a wireless network at my house and put in a new office, however the acccess point is in another room, and i really didn't want to use a cordless phone. I do want to use this phone with my fax. Can it be hooked to my laptop which receives the wireless signal from the router and then hook a phone to it. Note, i have Satellite access. |

While it can be done, I can assure you that your quality will be mediocre at best. With satellite as your provider, there will be inherent latency which could potentially cause delay in audio, periods of lost audio, and choppy audio. By using your laptop's wireless connectivity and sharing it to the ethernet port with ICS, your now adding another layer which could compile more issues on top of it. Any type of electrical interference could cause issues with the quality. You then have the OS and software factor which at any time may cause issues with the service in general.
So to sum it up, it can be done using ICS but it is not something I recommend nor will you be able to get any type of support from Vonage with this setup. |

I suspected i would have problems with the signal. I haven't attempted to hook this up at home for some time, since then though i have ordered the fastest connections which Wild Blue offers, it doesn't blaze but is suitable most of the times, my boy can play most of his games with the current speed. I suppose i can just get a cordless phone and mount the portal near the access point and use the handset at my desk. I still have AT&T as my primary phone service, my wife won't let me turn it off for a number of reasons. thanks for your help. |

How is the quality in general over your satellite connection? If you hook a phone to it where it is, does it sound OK?
You can try the laptop using ICS and if the quality is any less then what it was from when the VDV21 was directly connected to the router, then you know you can't use it this way and wont cost you a dime to test it out.
Another method to get the phone signal from one room to another without tapping into your twisted pair home wiring is a wireless phone jack. If it is in your budget, they cost between 30 - 50 bucks.
Here is an example. They are many brands out there and some better then others.
