I would recommend the V-Portal ( I have one )....works great !....has caller ID....voice mail alert....call logs....easy dialing feature....able to check your status and system.

Also works very well as a one port router....meaning set-up in front ( no QOS issues )....cable modem > V-Portal > Linksys router > Network.

It's Vonage's latest and preferred device....and if any issues pop-up....it's all in their court !....they can't put the blame/issue on anybody else ( like linksys ).

The PAP2 is an older and more stable device which is a good thing. It just works and there isn't much bad that people have said about it.

The V-Portal is really what they are pushing these days and while it has had some issues reported here, they seem to be less frequent. In the long run the V-Portal firmware will get more attention since it is their current generation device.

So long term probably V-Portal, but short to mid-term PAP2.

Oh I almost forgot. Make sure its the PAP2 v2 which is the newer version.

I know this isn't an answer, but hopefully it will guide you to a decision.

If it were me I would get a PAP2 v2 since I know they work and if I need to buy a V-Portal in a few years I will.

Thanks for all the info...On Amazon.com I saw the PAP2 (vonage) for $79.99 but it doesn't state if it's v2 or not. I don't feel like playing the guessing game and they ship me the older model so I will just go ahead and pick up the V-Portal...Thanks for all the useful information...
Hopefully all the pieces will come this week and I will finally have reliable phone and internet service..

I have had no issues with using the V-Portal as my main router. I have done speed tests and found no diffrence using this one vs. a standard router. Currently my setup is Cable modem- V-Portal- 26 port switch- Netgear WAP. Also I have numerous devices connected to my network (3-Direc TV DVR's, XBOX,network printer,2- computers) and the V-portal seems to be doing a fine job. It does not have some of the cooler interfaces found with Linksys routers and Tomato or DD-WRT firmware but the keep it simple method often works well.

Here is an update...I got the V-Portal and I purchased the WRT54GL...I updated the firmware of the WRTG54GL to the latest version of Tomato...So my hook up is Cable Modem -> WRT54GL/Tomato -> V-Portal.
I disabled DHCP on the VPortal so I just have the telephone connected to it. On my router I have 2 computers and a switch connected to it. I don't have anything connected to switch just yet. I think I hooked up everything right but I am not too impressed with my phone Quality. I guess I need to play around with my upload/download settings via the QOS on the router. I made sure to set the Vportal to Highest and it's being recognized via the MAC address. When I speak with people, they tell me that I sound fine however I hear them a bit choppy. On speedtest, I am getting download speeds of around 5K and upload around 480. I used the nmhoy method of multiplying by .9 and placing those numbers in their respective fields. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Generally the downstream QoS isn't as helpful as the packets get discarded. (since you can't control how quickly your ISP sends you things)

Is it possible that when this is going on that you can using all of your downstream bandwidth from something like bittorrents?

If it is this you need to throttle your torrent client to have a download limit to leave some for Vonage.

The other thing if you haven't done it would be to set other types of traffic lower so ensure the proper quality. You could either do this by MAC or by the different types of traffic.

The way I have things set it works for me fine. The only snag I have in quality is when iTunes is downloading really large podcasts which take up all of my downstream bandwidth. I haven't taken the time to see if there is a way to limit it since it happens infrequently.
