Hi, I just bought Vonage account to be used in Oman. After the nasty surprise that Vonage is blocked in oman, which ofcourse Vonage didnt say anything about, I tried to find a solution and purchased a VPN account with blacklogic.com (PPTP VPN). The account is working but still, for one reason or another, I still can not get the Vonage going. The "phone 1" light is never on when i pick up the phone I keep hearing the message "this phone can not register to Vonage network. I have a wireless compact Linksys router WRT54GC that allows VPN passthrough. The VPN network is active on my PC & all sites are no longer blocked, except Vonage
Is it a problem related to the router or is the adaptor malfuncitoning? or what Can someone help please. I am about to lose my mind.
I have a Vonage adaptor from D-link (model no. VTA-UV) The adaptor is connected to the same router where my pc is connected. the router is connected to the DSL modem. |

Thanks for the reply. I read this thread earlier. it says that a switch would solve the issue. I am not very much familiar with switches. do you link them to the router or the router is no more needed.
Thanks for help. |

One thing I would like to point out is the slight negativity I detected towards Vonage in your remark, "After the nasty surprise that Vonage is blocked in oman, which ofcourse Vonage didnt say anything about,".
It is not up to Vonage to track, post, and list international country's ISP's and they're local laws in regards to Voip services. It is up to you as the consumer to do the research before you make the purchase. You are lucky that Vonage will even allow you to use their service and provide any type of support for you at all.
See section 10.4 of the Vonage Terms of Service.
10.4 Use of Service and Device by Customers Outside the United States. Although we encourage you to use our service to call foreign countries from the United States and to use our service as you travel, the services are only offered and supported in the United States. Our service is designed to work generally with unencumbered high-speed internet connections. However, if the high-speed internet connection you are using is not within a Vonage service area or your ISP or broadband provider places restrictions on using Voip services, we do not claim that they will allow you to use our service. You will be solely responsible for any violations of local laws and regulations or violations of ISP and broadband provider terms of service because of your use of our service. |

If you plug your Vonage device and your PC in to your router, this should work. You will need to understand ICS or Internet connection sharing, do a google search, you will lern how to do that.
I also think you will need to set your PC's IP as the WAN address, host and DNS in the Vonage device (static IP).
Firewall settings may be another issue on the PC. You may need to allow certain ports for Vonage to work through your PC.
Youe PC will need to be ON to use the Vonage service, and you will need to be logged on to your VPN (via the PC) as well.
Regarding your comment "blocked in oman, of course Vonage didnt say anything about"; I agree with VonTechMgr, it is NOT their responsibility, similar to a situation when I bought a six pack of beer from the local 7-11 and they did not tell me I could not bring it in to Saudi Arabia . . . go figure! |

Well, i really dont want to spend much time arguing on this but let me just say this:
First I bought Vonage from UK not US. Second, I agree with you that Vonage can not know everything about ISPs but when we asked their sales agent he simply said yes it works everywhere. They should train their staff to say "we dont know, you would better check first". dont you think ?
Admire your spirit to defend Vonage, though. |

In theory it will work everywhere providing you have a broadband connection and are tech savvy enough to figure out the workarounds. I mean I have been doing systems and networks for 15 years and I am sure I can get Vonage to work on Mars if given the chance. How well it will work is another story. |

are you still having problem using your Vonage? I moved to oman last week, and I have the same problem. I bought witopia VPN. I can make phone call and receive calls, but I get disconnected in 1 or 2 minutes. The internet LED on my modem goes to red, and the phone says "this phone cant registered to Vonage or something.
please let me know if you have fixed your problem. |

Dear Vonagers,
Will a kind soul post a detailed solution to make Vonage work in places like this. I read many posts, and I am not able to implement them.
Can you please post an implementation that works. Please do not use vague terms like"use a vpn on your ...". I need a detailed configuration or set up, and where to get the components.
Kind regards, |
