Post subject: Lower Rate for Unlimited Calling
I have read on other forums that it is possible to get a lower rate with the unlimited plan. Has anyone had any success with that?

I've been on the unlimited for $14.99/month for over a year now. They give the promotional rate for one year at a time. When my first year was up, I called and "asked" to keep the same plan. I do believe the amount of time you have been a subscriber does play into their decision to give you a promotion or not. I doubt a brand new or fairly new customer will get a promotion. But it's worth a shot.

If you can't get a promotional rate with a time-limit, you also have the option to pay for a whole year in advance. I think that comes to about $20.00/month for the unlimited plan.
A recent financial news story indicates that
Vonage
has secured new financing and will be able to roll over the debt that was due in December of this year. This should mean that they will avoid the previously-discussed possible bankruptcy filing this year. In that case, it is probably safe to subscribe for a year.

I have chosen not to subscribe for the reduced annual rate, since, the way I read the TOS, my term would change from month to month to year to year.
Should I decide to cancel
Vonage
(at some future date), I would have to wait for my 1 year anniversary. In other words, my agreement would automatically be renewed for a one year term, every year (at least the way I read the TOS.)
Actually, this is what I recently agreed to do wth my cable company, choosing their 2 year term, also automatically renewed. However, I saved better than 35% per year when I chose the the two year deal and they are required (per their contract) to send me a letter 30 days before the renewal date, allowing me to opt out.
As it turns out, the cable company is RAISING their rates next month, (but not for me) as I am locked in to the contract rate for the two year term. So I got lucky (so far) on this decision.

I am not locked into another year contract, I asked that question. I don't have any plans on leaving
Vonage
, there is no better alternative here in Canada. It would be nice if
Vonage
could get me a local number though.

I have no plans to cancel either, but who knows. My interpretation of the 1 year commitment is based on the following in the TOS:
TOS wrote:
Your service term refers to the period of time for which we will bill you periodically in advance (for example, one month or one year).
and:
Disconnection by you. If you attempt to disconnect service before the end of your current service term, you will be responsible for all the charges for your current term, including unbilled charges, plus any disconnection fee. In addition, if you disconnect service that is based on a commitment before the end of the commitment, you agree to pay us the applicable recovery fee.
In other words, no refund for the portion unused since I would have paid 1 year in advance, and that is my term.
The discount is a little under 20%, which could be as much as a 5 year payback depending on when in the 1 year term if you choose to cancel.
I have a much longer history with the cable company, and do not anticipate cancelling, as they are the only game in town, except for satelllite who typically have a contract 1 or 2 years as well per the agreement with them:
"You agree to pay for 18 consecutive months (for standard receivers) or 24 consecutive months (for HD and/or DVR receivers) of a $29.99/month or greater programming package."

Just to clarify my situation, I'm not on the annual plan. I still pay month to month but I'm only paying $14.99 every month for the unlimited. One other note. I'm not a heavy user at all. Most months I'm under 500 minutes and if I'm over, it's not by more than a couple hundred minutes. Maybe that fact is considered when they offer a discounted rate.
