I am a three year Vonage customer. I cannot seem to find a solution.
1) Comcast Broadband
2) Cable Modem: Linksys BEFCMU10
3) Cisco Wireless + 4 port router. WRT110 OR Linksys WRT54G
4) Linksys Vonage PAP2 v2 adaptor
Vonage works great with no other users on the network. As soon as a wireless user is connected to the router, sound quality instantly degrades. While I can hear others fine, listener only hears every other word. I have swapped out routers to no avail.
Any clues?
Thank you

This just means that you have no QOS configured on your router. If your setup is as simple as BEFCMU10 -> WRT54G -> PAP2 + wired / wireless PC's, you will need to configure QOS in your WRT54G using the most updated Linksys firmware or overwrite the flash with DD-WRT or Tomato which seems to be another favorite among the forum users. Depending upon the hardware revision of your WRT54G will determine if you can use some of the 3rd party firmware or not.
While you have sufficient bandwidth which is you to the internet, your router is unable to properly forward all packets from your LAN to the internet completely or in the correct order. So what is happening is the slightest web traffic is causing your RTP packets to be discarded / dropped or sent out of order to the internet at your routers WAN interface.
If you can configure a QOS option in your router using the firmware I listed above either based upon the physical port assignment the PAP2 is connected to, by the PAP2's Mac or IP address, by protocol(give all UDP packets highest priority), or by port range (10050 - 10150), your audio should clear up. Note - these are the RTP ports all Vonage devices are hard coded for even though you will see other postings for 10000 to 20000 which dates back to Vonage pre 2004 and are no longer needed. With QOS enabled and configured properly, all the PAP2's RTP packets will be sent to the internet with high priority in real time. |

Thank you for the help. I've been testing the new configuration for several days and have a noticeable improvement. |

What exactly did you configure? Did you use the default Linkysys QOS or did you install DD-WRT or Tomato and use their QOS? Also what type of QOS did you configure? (by port range, by protocol, by MAC, by IP)
I am sure someone else may have the same problem and having what you did may help them if they read this. If we know what you did, we may also be able to make suggestions to help you tweak it even more. |

I logged into my router and entered the MAC address into the Quality of Service tab. The router gave options to enter a MAC address or dedicate a port. I went with the dedicate the port. |

If I may add something, call into Vonage and have them set your rtp ports at 18050 and 18150 respectively, this seems to help with comcast subscribers. |

BTW, Because I have a v8.0 Linksys box, I used the default firmware. The procedure to use third party firmware seemed a bit challenging with v8 |

Nate Hoy has excellent tips on setting up QOS here:
http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html
I have a WRT54G that is at least 4 years old with it's stock firmware.
It has a Manual option on the QOS page, and following Nate's advice I set the value to 90% of my measured upload speed.
Works like a champ. Auto is notorious for not calculating upload speed correctly.
I assign High to the port that my Phone adapter uses for simplicity, but setting the phone adapter MAC address High would work just as well. |
