As near as I can tell, Vonage have been promising that customisation / removal of the American voicemail prompts is in the pipeline.

This pipeline has so far extended for at least 2 years as far as I can tell.

Just an option to turn off the existing prompt would be good enough.

So how about an update?

Please note that "we promise something is happening" followed by "we hope this answered your enquiry" is worse than no answer at all - lets have something more customer focused than irritating stock reponses.

The email response I've had from Vonage is depressingly predictable:

Dear Sean,

Thank you for contacting Vonage, the award winning digital phone service!

I understand you would like the "Press the Pound key" message to be customized.

I am sorry to inform you that currently we do not have the option to customize the "Press the Pound key" message. This is a default message. I do understand that including this option would be beneficial to you and many of our customers.

I have forwarded this request to our development team and also have explained the value that customers gain from it. This feature request will soon be introduced along with our existing features in future. However, I am afraid that I will not be able to provide you the exact time frame of when it will be included. Please visit our website often for regular updates.

If you have any questions, your Vonage team is available to assist you from 8 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week. Contact us whenever and however it suits you!

- On-Line Help Centre at http://www.vonage.co.uk/help.php
- Contact Us at http://www.vonage.co.uk/help_contactus.php
- Or call us free by dialling 150 from your Vonage line or FreePhone 0800 008 6000

If you call us for Technical Support, in order for our highly trained specialists to successfully assist you, it is highly recommended that you are near the Vonage device you are calling about and in the location you intend to use your Vonage service.

Thanks again for choosing Vonage, a better phone service for less!

Sincerely,

Vonage Customer Care

===== END =====

So, plenty of blether telling me what a marvellous service I'm receiving, nothing but weasel words as far as the actual issue is concerned. Poor.

FWIW, I've addressed this in my own case by sticking SimulRing on the Vonage line and then having it forward to another line that has messages I can customise.

This is exactly the sort of bollocks I pay to avoid by having separate lines, but currently having some odd voice banging on about the "pound" key isn't acceptable.

You COULD dispense with Vonage voice mail, and use a simple answering machine (or a more sophisticated CPE-based voice mail system). It would allow you to customize almost everything, but it would not provide coverage when your line is busy.

Vonage is currently undergoing a migration to an upgraded Voicemail platform which may have the capability to provide designated VM prompts and greetings based upon country (US, UK, CA). However, while this may be possible, there are no plans at this moment in time that I know of to change these prompts to say things like "Hash" instead of "Pound". I will speak to the Director of the Voicemail group tomorrow and find out for sure.

So I spoke with the director of our Voicemail group and the UK language customization will be performed once the migration to the new platform is completed. There is no exact target date for this completion as there have been issues along the way and some other road blocks. Do not expect to see the change to your Voicemail until the end of 1st quarter of 2009 and possibly even into the 2nd quarter.
