I currently have Verizon for both my phone and internet service (FIOS). I want to dump their phone service (and use Vonage) and keep FIOS - but I've heard Verizon might life difficult for me when I ask to drop the phone service - for example, by taking my FIOS connection down for a week or more for "administration reasons" or some other BS.

My home internet connection is critical to me, I can't be without it for even a day.

Are my fears justified?

I doubt that Verizon has any specific company policy that would make it difficult to port your voice service while keeping your data service on FIOS. I have seen this done without interruption.

But, Verizon is a huge organization, and often seems to suffer from lack of internal communication or coordination. Also, their physical network, like any hardware that is installed outdoors, exposed to weather, falling trees, errant backhoes, and human error, is less than 100% reliable under the best of conditions.

My recommendation, if your home Internet service is critical, is to have a backup service that uses a different physical network: e.g. cable tv or wireless if they are available.

I have had FiOS and Vonage for two+years and everything has been good.

I ported the number, "(FiOS was billed on landline account.) got the Verizon closeout statement, called about 10 days later asking about the FiOS bill. "No problem, you have been a Verizon customer since the beginning of time and we will bill you." No statement. Called again and after the usual five transfers "You need a credit card on file. No we don't bill." They also don't do checking withdrawals. Can't do a year in advance. I complained a little because it is my duty to do so but gave them the CC. I think they charge $4 more to bill on CC than they did to the landline account.

My daughter has had a bare FiOS line for about two years also and also had to have a CC on file.

Both wife and daughter work at home for the same company and need reliable Internet and phone service. Except for a few brief times FiOS and Vonage have been great.
