Hi- We've reviewed most of the previous posts on this subject and have tried everything suggested, and still am unable to hard wire our phones to our wall jacks - just get a dead signal. I'm using the Vonage V-Portal, but have also tried using the Motorola 2142 modem with no luck in getting our wall jacks to work.

We have 3 brown cloth-covered lines coming in from outside which screw onto a base with a total of 5 screws, but of which only 3 are used by the 3 cloth-covered lines coming in; one screw to the left, one to the right, and one in the middle. We disconnected the phone jack green/red wires (and one set of black/yellow wires) from these screws in what we thought was the way to disconnect our previous phone lines as per instructions. (Fairpoint disconnected our phone service a few weeks ago when we started with Vonage. All of our existing phone jacks worked up until disconnection with Fairpoint - now dead sounds when a phone is plugged in.)

We are currently using a base phone system (with Vonage V Portal) with two extra phones in the house, but we'd love to be able to plug our kitchen wall phone back into the jack for use.

I am unable to paste a photo of our wires etc., but if anyone is able to help and would like pictures, please let me know how I can post them.

Certainly appreciate your help. Thanks.

What you are describing sounds like the old-fashoned lightning protector. You want to make sure that the wire coming from outside remains connected as this protects you from fire due to lightning strikes on the phone wiring.

The inside part should be disconnected. You described a red/green pair and a yellow/black pair. Were these connected to the same screw terminals on the lightning protector? If they were, your phone jacks are wiring separately and you need to connect the red/green pair to the yellow/black pair in whichever way they were connected on the lightning protector (probablly red with yellow and green with black).

To make these connections, you should use special phone wiring connectors, which can be found at a store like Home Depot and not screw-on wiring nuts. Alternatively (as I did) get a phone jack and connect these to the wiring block of the phone jack. That way, you can create a "pig tail" wire to connect to the lightning protector that would allow you to easily and quickly reconnect to your local telco (but why would you ever want to do that, unless you sell the house or something like that).

Thanks so much for your reply. Those wires were connected to the lightening protector screw terminals. We'll pick up some phone wiring connectors at Home Depot and try your suggestions.

After re-reading your answer, I have a question: You mentioned that the "inside part should be connected." I'm not sure what that means - do you mean that the three cloth-covered wires should remain connected to the screw terminals? I can send you a photo of the setup if it would help. Thanks Smile

Sorry I wasn't clear. The wires that come in from outside should remain connected to the lightning protector. I believe those are the ones you described as cloth-covered.
