Well, my life bites. I have had the RTP300 for well over a year. I just have gotten around to setting up a wired network with it. I cannot do it. We ran the cat 5 cable but the laptops aren't pulling from the network. I cannot figure out what the problem is... Can someone help me? All computers are Windows Xp.
The router works fine to the main computer, but will not work with the other computers. When I plug the cat 5 in the ports being used blink like the phone light does when not in use. I cannot figure out what the problem is. If someone could help me I would be greatly appreciative. |

have you enabled dhcp on your rtp300? also have you made all your other computers obtain ip address automatically?
it sounds like there is some kind of conflict or your rtp300 is not handing out ip addresses properly.
that's the first place I'd check.
also a short network description would be helpful like:
cable modem -> rpt300 -> computer 1, 2, and 3 or something like this. |

I have enabled the dhcp (i think that is it) I don't know how to make the laptops obtain everything automatically, that is one of my problems... The network is supposed to look like this:
Cable modem>RTP300>Desktop,laptop1 and laptop 2. The computers are all plugged into the ethernet hub on the back of the RTP 300. The desktop stays solid while the other ports blink? |

Do the computers that are unable to access the internet receive an IP address? |

No. I go to the laptops and go to run: cmd. That brings up dos. I do the following:
ipconfig
and I get some message about no media connected. I can try this:
ipconfig /all
and same thing.... very frustrating... |

Try disabling auto detection of link speed and/or duplex on the ethernet card in your computer. I'm not sure how you would do it on Vista but in XP you would open the properties sheet of the ethernet connection and then click the Configure button. Under the Advanced Tab, there should be options to change those. |

I wonder if you also need to enable the LAN ethernet devices on your laptops. |

What happens if you take your laptops to where the main computer is(the one you say is working) and plug the ethernet cable that is in that computer to one or both of your laptops? Do the laptops work? Are you able to browse, get an ip etc.? If so, what happens if you then take the other end of the ethernet cable and move it to a different port on the back of the RTP? Can your main computer still access the internet? Doing these things will help you determine if it is a problem with the switch on the RTP or settings on your laptops or your wiring.
Did you do the wiring yourself or use premade cables? |
