My RT31P2, after about 4 years of service, has died this morning.

It had progressively been getting worse with a faint buzzing sound, only to start getting louder (in phone), and sometimes would say "Sorry, the number you dialed was invalid", after retrying for 4 times. Now, the buzzing is quite loud, and the other party can't even hear me, they say i sound like im going in a tunnel with a cell phone.

It's not the internet, that's for sure, does it anywhere, and this network has another RT31P2 for someone else, that still works like a champ.

So the question is, how do I get a new box, and keep my number? Do I just go out and purchase any box with the Vonage logo? Preferrably one without a router built in, and just a dumb phone terminal, as I have a domain network, and don't want any more routers, only the main Cisco system installed in a rack.

Yes, just go buy one. Seems like the V-Portal is what most people say is available these days in stores.

Once you get it you can activate it online using the "Activate it now link" on the Vonage home page.

Once you add it to your account just move the phone line from the old adapter to the new one and you are done.

Don't underestimate the importance of power going to the device; the symptoms you describe can be caused by a failing or incorrect power supply with the actual device being fine. Make sure that you have the correct power supply connected to your device. For the RT31P2, it should output 12V 1A (may be printed as 12V 1000mA). If the correct one is connected, try swapping out with a different one with identical power output rating.

power supply is great, and was tested on an oscilloscope.

and yes, it's the one that came with it.. the box had never even been touched in the 4 years of it's operation. been in the network wiring closet since it's installation.

on a scope, the output looks like a bad electrolytic capacitor, and the machine does smell of slight electrolytic. i'll open it up and see if a quick cap replacement job fixes it. if not, v-portal it is, looks like a nice unit.

Ok, so I downloaded and installed Vonage Talk for now.

I'm rather confused at how it works. My phone number is on my fathers account (so that makes it two numbers total), I just pay him for it.

So, on Talk, I enter my fathers login, and get the command center (i use a mac, and sadly am stuck with the old outdated version)..

I place a call, and while the receiving line "said" it was my number showing up, I have no idea how to really garante it's my number calling. BUT, if my phone OR my fathers rings, the Talk responds to BOTH phones ringing.

So, how does Talk actually work?
