PostPosted: Mon Sep 29, 2008 6:13 pm    Post subject: Can Motorola VT2442 & Linksys together use same IP Range Reply with quote Back to top

Hello Everyone,
I have the following network setup:
Cable Modem -> Linksys router (WRT54G) -> Motorola VT2442 -> Motorola VT2142

Also connected to the Linksys router Ports are a whole slew of network devices.
e.g. Tivo, Computer, Xbox 360.

With this current setup, everything is working just fine an dandy. However...
I'm trying to add a new hardwired computer to this network and don't have anymore free ports on my Linksys WRT54G
I do however have free ports on the Motorola VT2442.

Is there any way using my current setup, that I can configure the VT2442 so that I can plug this new computer into it, and still be able to access it (View it) on my Internal network.
As it stands now I can only see and access computers on the 192.168.1.* IP range which are connected directly to my Linksys
Computers plugged into the Motorola have an IP: 192.168.15.* which I can't see when I browse my network Sad

My main reason for wanting to do this is so I can continue to monitor the kids computers using my current Remote access application via my internal network.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance tech folk.

I hav done this with TWO routers but NEVER three. It may just work though. Say your Linkys is Start the IP range on the DHCP LAN side at anything at or above above

Connect both the VT2442 and the VT2142 to the Linksys and set their IP's to Static, and respectively. Be sure to set their (the Vonage devices) DNS and Host IP's WAN side to (or whatever the Linksys is). Use two different DHCP ranges LAN side on the 2142 and the 2442 such a and or whatever.

You will then conect a hardwired unit to both of the Motorola devices, since you used another port from your Linksys to parallel the Vonage devices.
You have effectively put the Vonage routers on the same subnet, the DNS and Host IP points back to the Linksys and you know where to access your Vonage devices by IP since they are static.

The DHCP assignment by the Vonage Routers points back through the static Host and DNS which also will alllow full network sharing.

Let us know if this works!

Another option is a cheap 5 port switch hanging off of your Linksys.

Thanks ED56,

I remember messing with a lot of those settings when I first configured my routers, and I ended up with a number of hours with no Phone, and resetting routers to factory defaults, I don' t know how many times.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to advise on those settings, and for now I have taken the easy route and plugged in a cheap 5 port switch.
When I get some time (and the kids aren't on the phones) I do plan to try and apply the settings you suggested, But for the meantime thanks for you help and I have managed to achieve what I set out to do Wink
