Post subject: Hardware Update?
Hello,
I have had service now for over 3 years and have a Linksys RT31P2 device.
My question is have the broadband routers that are being distributed by
Vonage
now any better (more features/better quality etc.) than the RT31P2?
If so is there a way to get this unit swapped out?

There would really be no advantage to updating your hardware as the
Voip
modules perform the same way and there is not much difference. The one thing that your device does not support is the T.38 protocol. So if you use
Vonage
for faxing and have issues with faxing, this may be the only reason you would want to update.
There is also a QOS engine on the newer devices that yours does not have but to take advanced of this, the
Vonage
device must be first to the modem in your network setup so that it has the public IP on the WAN port.
Note: You are not entitled to a free upgrade so
Vonage
may want you to pay if you request a new device.

Check out the new vportal or vdv21 device from
Vonage
. It is the more "intelligent" device from
Vonage
and should do a better job than your existing device. Also has built in self-diagnostics and an LCD viewing screen on the device itself. Call them and see if they would replace your existing device and how much the costs to you would be. One never knows til one takes the step.

If the device is working leave it alone.
If you want better routing features, get a WRT54GL and load DD-WRT on it.
If you are having phone problems with the RT31P2 post the issues and run the tests in the sticky post for people to look at.
Bottom line is that the
Vonage
devices aren't meant to be great routers so if you need features or performance, but a stand-alone unit.
