I have a DSL modem, D-link DI-604 old wired router without QoS amd a Motorla VT2142 Vonage gateway. I use to have them connected modem -> router -> Vonage with no problems with a cable connection.
Just switched to DSL (slower connection) and am having problems with bad bad quality.
Any tips on how to switch around connections and settings to get the QoS working on the Vonage device? Can I put it in between the modem and router to take priority? I just tried it and had no internet, although the phone worked. THanks |

Make sure that the 2142 is set to DHCP LAN side and the D-link DI-604 is set to DHCP WAN and Lan Side. Also, VERY IMPORTANT, make sure that the D-link DI-604 is not set to 192.168.15.xxx on the LAN side (use something like starting at 192.168.100.2) (this is assuming that the 2142 is set to factor default to 192.168.15.1 and dishes out IS from 192.168.15.2)
DSL---> VT2142 (DHCP starting 192.168.15.2) - - - ->( DHCP ) D-link DI-604 (DHCP - starting 192.168.100.2) - - - ->Network
Also, change your bandwidth saver on the Vonage web site control panel (under features) to the lowest setting. |

OK, so I've set the order as follows and got everything working: modem -> Vonage -> router ->computer
If I receive a call the phone quality is ok.
If I make a call I can hear people but all they hear is garbage nonsense, what the dilly with that????? |

in win XP click start>run>type "cmd" without quotes>press enter>in black box type "ping -t -l 800 www.yahoo.com" without quotes, btw that is a minus symbol and a lower case L >"time=" should always be under 120ms and never say "request timed out"> when you experience problems on your phone, you will see high latency and packet loss on this test. HIGH LATENCY AND PACKET LOSS ARE INTERNET CONNECTION PROBLEMS NOT PROBLEMS CAUSED BY Vonage.
unless its a bandwidth issue, which it's usually not due to the simple fact that Vonage's audio stream is only about 100k at MAX up and down
