PostPosted: Fri Sep 26, 2008 3:57 pm    Post subject: Calls to Mexico with Latin America Plan Reply with quote Back to top

I need to know how to make the following calls with Vonage to Large Cities in Mexico:

1.) dial a toll free ( 01-800...) number in Mexico (not a U.S. toll-free)
I tried: 011-52-0-1800... and 011-52-1-800... and 011-52-800...

2.) dial a Mexican Cell phone.
I tried: 011-52-044(Mexican cell prefix).....
I tried: 011-52-(area code) and number

3.) dial a regular phone number:
I tried: 011-52-(area code) and number.

These are all variations of ways to call within Mexico, so I tried with adding the country codes.

The only sounds except error messages was that it rang three times and then nothing. And yes I tried to call more than one phone number.

Please help.

There was a post a few weeks ago with someone having problems dialing numbers in Mexico. The calls were not going through. I checked by dialing my own cell phone(which has worked in the past) and the call never rang through. However, I did get charged for both test calls even though the call was never completed. You should check your billing to make sure you aren't getting charged for these.

1. I have no idea. It looks like you have the right idea but I've never called a toll free Mexican number with Vonage.

2. To dial a Mexican cell phone you need to dial 01152 then 1 then the area code and number. Don't dial the 044 like you must do from an land line inside Mexico. Keep in mind that you get billed $0.23 a minute for calls to Mexican cell phones even if you have the call Mexico and Lat. America plan.

3. That is the right way to dial a land line in Mexico.

When I used to make calls more often to Mexico with my Vonage line, I used to notice that it would ring 2 or 3 times with the American sounding ring and then switch to the beep ring tone sound of Mexico. When I made the aforementioned test calls, it didn't do that. I never heard the Mexican beep ring tone. Just a couple American sounding rings and then dead air. I'll try to make a test call to a land line soon and post the result. I suspect that Vonage is having troubles with calls to Mexico.

I just made a test call to a Mexican land line and everything was fine. The call went through and I talked to the other party for a couple minutes. You owe me $0.02 for that. Lol Also, I made a test call to my Mexican cell and the call rang through. So it looks like everything is working at the moment. This time I heard the familiar sounds as well. Two American sounding rings and then the Mexican sounding ring. I think that is the indicator that your call is being completed/routed successfully.

Maybe do an Internet search on how to dial a toll free Mexican number from the USA. Although, I suspect that calling toll free numbers will only work when you are inside the country or using a phone service from the country that you are calling. Keep in mind that, in the USA anyway, the company with the toll free number pays the cost of the call. So I sure wouldn't want a toll free number and have to pay the cost of someone calling me internationally. I think you'll have to find the local Mexican number of the place you want to call and dial that instead of the toll free number.

Thank you for your clear well-written response. You informed me of a couple things I didn't know before. ej: calling a Mexican Cell phone costs both parties. Thanks

I called a land line and it finally went through, exactly like you said. Didn't work yesterday.

I too called my Mexican Cell Phone and got ONE ring and then dead air. Never connected and dead air.

I dialled: 011-52-1-315-107-XXXX

Am I missing something?

Thanks again.
I'm on the Pacific Coast, how 'bout you?

I don't know what carrier you are using but to my knowledge, that shouldn't be the case. The 2 big GSM providers here are a caller pays network. Meaning that you don't get charged anything for answering a call. I know for a fact that Telcel and Movistar operate in this way. Perhaps you are using Nextel or USAcell. Those could be different.

You are dialing your cell phone correctly. What cell provider do you have? I'm in the south central region. About 100 miles north of Mexico City.

Cool I am not using a cell phone, but I do have a TelCel phone.

I posted on the forum to get someone that uses Vonage with International experience.

I believe I got what I needed. Thanks for the responses. Wink
