Hi all, nice forum !
Just signed up for Vonage today, and already thinking ahead. At the moment I have a cable modem and a router.
I want to be able to switch the router off at night, just leaving the modem on for Vonage.
The modem is connected to the WAN input of the router, and the router to the PC's.
I would like to split the lead so that the Vonage box is connected to the modem, and the router is also connected tot he modem.
Will a normal RJ45 (2 in 1 out) lead work ?
Thanks |

A splitter will not work with ethernet. A given network line can only have two ends, and can only connect two devices.
For your purpose, connect the WAN port of the Vonage device directly to your modem, and connect your router to the LAN port of the Vonage device. Then you may power down your router, leaving the Vonage device and your modem powered up, and you'll still have telephone service. |

Hi
They are sending me a D-Link VTA, looking on their site it seams it has to have a router ? they do have a V-portal, which has a 1 port router, so I don’t think I can connect the D-Link direct to the modem can I ?
If I had known about the V-Portal I would probably have asked for one, but its only £9.99, and I guess a fortune for delivery...I do have a 4 port hub, but as it uses a mains power supply, there is no point in using it
I normally switch the modem and router off at night, however the phones answering machine is on then, so I guess its no big deal if the phone is switched off too, after all they do provide a answering message service.
Even if the splitter did work, the devices wouldn’t, as the modem will only give one MAC address (So Im told) |
