Yes, I do have a high speed connection obviously.. So why do I need dialup? Every once in a while I dialup into a company intranet for company business. But when I attempt to dialup on the Vonage line, I get a error message "678 Remote computer not responding" on Windows dialup manager. Vonage supports faxing on their line..but I suppose the 56k modem data is too compressed to work over the network. Anybody have any similar issues or suggestions? Thanks Louis. |

There are other posts here that refer to a 'dedicated fax line' from Vonage -- not sure on the real techie reason behind it, but your main voice line doesn't support faxing. Perhaps that impedes with Dial Up-Networking as well?
Regretfully, I'm really unable to offer more insight since I pulled my voice modem from my pcs and replaced with wifi cards...
I'd be curious if anyone with a dedicated Vongage fax line has had luck using Dial-Up Networking?
Good luck LouisB_TX! |

Negative. I just tried it after reading this thread, and couldn't get the modem to negotiate at any speed.
On the bright side, we have a $14.99/500 minute line just for our fax machine and (so far...) haven't had any problems with faxing. <knock wood>

it's because the baud rate is too fast. same issue with fax, home alarms, tivo's, etc etc. Vonage can't support much more than a 9600 baud connection. |

I don't know if this will work but it can't hurt to try it. Start by lowering your modem speed. I would start at 33.6 and go down from there. Also try adding the prefix *99 to your dial string and see if that helps. Please let us know. |

For the record, I init-stringed my modem to the following, each of which was confirmed to work with the dialup ISP over the POTS line before starting the test.
v.34 @ 28.8 v.34 @ 14.4 v.34 @ 9600 v.32 bis @ 14.4 v.32 @ 9600 v.32 @ 4800 v.22 bix @ 2400
Vonage would not even support a 2400 baud connection, although oddly enough we have no trouble faxing.
Even though this experiment proved to be a failure, it was at least an entertaining walk down Nostalgia Lane hearing the different tones of modem handshake routines I haven't heard in years. (I'd forgotten how fast the 2400 baud handshake was.)

I've also tried to make modem calls over Vonage, and had no luck. However, you may want to call Vonage and change your packetization rate to 10ms instead of 20ms. I never tried it myself because the modem calls weren't important, and I didn't want to waste bandwidth on normal voice calls. |

I would like to know prior to asking Vonage to change my packetization, if this affect my voice call quality. I wouldn't want to sacifice voice quality just to dialup into my company's intranet a couple of times a week. Any input was (is) appreciated... Louis |

Oddly enough I successfuly transmitted a outbound fax,, haven't tried receiving yet. Any one know off the top of their head the baud rate for fax machines...I thought it was 14.4kbs. I really don't want to involve Vonage just yet. |

fax machines have different rates. it's not an across the board thing. an older one will be slower, newer will be faster. afaik, they don't go any faster than 14.4, but I could be way off. |
