2. ISP: Verizon FiOS
3. Download speed: 4666144 bps, Upload speed: 1863192 bps
4. D-Link DI-604 directly connected to internet
5. Vonage adapter: WRTP54G used only as VoIP adapter. Wireless turned off. No other devices connected behind.
6. Router configuration: DI-604 to internet. WRTP54G and WRT54GX4 connected behind DI-604. All PCs and other devices connected via wired or wireless connections to WRT54GX4.
7. On a consistent basis incoming calls are ringing once or twice and then going into a "limbo" state where the caller hears nothing but silence. The receiver on the VoIP end shows "Line in Use" while the caller is trying to decide what to do. The call disconnects itself after maybe 20 seconds. Calls that don't show this problem also rarely roll to voice mail. Instead an odd tone is heard and then the call briefly goes into a limbo state as well. I have unplugged and restarted the VoIP adapter a couple of times and it seems to work briefing after that, but the problem always comes back. We have been seeing this problem for the past couple of weeks.

I had hoped that someone would respond to my post with a "this is a known problem and this is how to fix it" but nothing so far....
I performed the speed test from a laptop hooked up directly behind the Linksys WRTP54G and received similar bandwidth results, but a QoS result that was *much* lower, ranging from 35% up to 70% but mostly somewhere just below 60%. Odd, since the same score from a computer going through a wireless G connection was 97%. I am going to check out some connections and see if this changes anything. Could low-ish QoS be causing my disconnect issue?
I am also a little concerned by the consistently low download bandwidth of 4-5Mb/sec, given that I am supposed to have 15Mb/sec and have gotten results in that range fairly consistently before. However, this wouldn't account for the VoIP not working but is something else to chase down.
Here are my behind-the-VoIP-adapter test results for anyone who wants to help:

What happens if you remove the DI-604 and connect the WRTP54G directly to the modem? |

Steve48 is on the right track. the only way to test to see if your vonage adapter wrtp54g is functioning properly is to run a test with it directly behind your modem minus the DI-604.
DI-604 is now discontinued according to the dlink website and it does not have qos at least i couldn't find it looking at the product manual.
this means that if your computers are working heavily both download and upload, then it means there is potentially trouble for your vonage connection.
My suggestion is the same, try it for a few days with only the wrtp54g directly behind the modem. If this works, then you know that the trouble is the DI-604.
Personally with that many computers on your network, I would invest in a third part firmware upgradable router with good QoS controls.
are you using a phone plugged directly into the vonage device or are you using home wiring? that might have an effect.
lastly the DI-604 might need to be configured with specific port forwarding instructions for your vonage device.
a few yrs ago when the wrtp54g was being bought with a lot of frequency, there were all kinds of issues with it much like the dlink vwr now... |

Thanks for all of the feedback! I thought I should close out this thread with my eventual solution:
This setup has worked fined for a couple of years now, so I didn't think there was a problem with the DI-604 or QoS setup.
I did a full reset on the WRTP54G (pushing the little button in the back) and hooked a laptop up to it to turn its wireless off and put other settings (such as password protection) back into place. It has worked flawlessly since then (just over a week now).
Apparently this was just a case of the WRTP54G getting "gunked up" and needing a fresh start. Note, as mentioned in my earlier posts, just powering down and starting up the unit did not help. |

Nice of you to post your final solution and thoughts. So often, people come here and post questions and get many replies. Then, you never hear anything about the solution or if something worked. |
