Hi,
I just got the v-portal setup kit. I have a dsl modem and TRENDnet 633GR wireless router like everyone else who has more than one computer. I have some question about the setup and hope someone can help me out. It looks like that I need to put the v-portal in between DSL modem and TRENDnet router based on the quick start guide. Do I really have to do that? If I do that which mean all of my outgoing/incoming internet traffic will go through the v-portal. I am just wondering if I can just plug in the v-portal using the yellow etherent port only and connect to the ethernet port in the back of my TRENDnet router. I do not see any reason why not and may be I just need to open certain ports in the TRENDnet router to allow the voip traffic. How do you guys do that? Any advice will be very appreciated.
Thanks.

You can set it up the way you are thinking, just make sure that you give the V-portal QoS priority in the TrendNet router.
In that router it looks like its under the StreamEngine setup.
I would add the V-Portal device as a Rule and give it the highest priority. This was regardless of what else is going on (other PCs, etc) the V-Portal should get priority. |

Thanks and just wondering how much bandwidth does voip consume in general speaking? My DSL line is 6 Mbps download/512 upload.
BTW, I have seem many people in this forum metion about Linksys RP312 device. Is it a third party replcaement for v-portal ? What is the gain of using this device?
Thanks. |

With the high call settings Vonage consumes at most 90kbps in each direction. There are also settings for 50kbps and 30kbps that can be used.
The RT31P2 is what you are asking about I assume. Its an older Vonage device that was commonly offered to new customers a few years ago before the V-Portal existed. No real gain in using this, although it is a pretty good phone device. It just happens to be what they gave me when I signed up back in 2004. |

Just want to double check that if I do what I mentioned from above, connect the v-portal ethernet port to the router, then I don't need to setup PPPoE on the v-portal by going to v-configure.com?
What is the ip address of the v-portal in case if need to login to play around? Is it default by static ip or dhcp client?
Thanks. |

yes, you do not want to setup PPPoE on your portal if it sits behind your router. I am assuming you are talking about connecting from your v-portal "internet" or "WAN" port not one of the ethernet port to your wireless router.

normally voip ip addresses are 192.168.15.1 not sure about the vportal specifically. check the quick setup guide or its users guide in the CD. I believe all vonage devices are defaulted to obtain IP addresses automatically. I strongly recommend using static IP personally. |
