PostPosted: Fri Aug 22, 2008 8:51 pm    Post subject: Modem disconnects daily (Vonage>Airport Express) Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I am living in Toronto, Canada and have been using Vonage for a few years now.

I have Bell DSL through a second tier provider (Dumped Bell for Rogers when I first got Vonage because they degraded my service, then dumped Rogers when they capped their service).

I have an Actiontec DSL Modem>Linksys RTP 300 Router>Airport Express.

I've configured the Linksys router to handle the PPPoE and the Airport Express in bridge mode to distribute the signal.

My problem is this – I lose my connection DAILY. I can not reconnect through the web interface of the RTP300 (though I can still connect to it), and must reset the modem to restore my connection to the internet.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any idea what the cause could be? I have contacted my ISP, but they shift the blame to Vonage. Vonage, likewise, shifts the blame to my ISP.

I'm no networking guy, but I *thought* I had figured out how to configure my home network using Static IP's.

Thanks.

I'm not a networking guy either, but the first thing I'd do is temporarily remove the networking equipment and connect the computer directly to the modem (with the proper setup, of course). If this works without the connection dropping daily, it lends credibility to the ISP's contention that it isn't their fault.

I have had problems with my Vonage router (old motorola vt1000) becoming flaky. I lose dial tone, net access and the web admin page for the router is not accessible. This happened every 45 mins to 2 hours.

After testing all my other network equipment (modem, wireless router) I determined that it was the Vonage router. I called tech support and since I was out of warranty had to go but a new router, but they did give me a $45 credit when I switched over to the new router.

Thanks,

Yeah, I contacted Vonage, and they said the same thing about the router (no longer under warranty, must purchase new one.), which I had hoped to avoid.

I removed my Vonage device and airport and hooked my computer directly to the modem, and lo and behold, I lost my connection. I called my ISP and they said it could be the wiring. Could that be it? It seems to me they don't want to accept any responsibility. As much as I hate it, I think I will have to go back to bell for a land line and ditch Vonage. I've had this problem for too long, and my wife needs a phone during the day.

Yes, it's possible that house wiring is causing the problem. Still, it seems a shame that the Bell setup is involved, and yet they stand to get more business from it.

Thanks Steve48. I may see if I can replace the old wiring before trying Bell – I REALLY don't want to go back to them.

If you have access to a telephone interface box outside the house and can somehow, temporarily, connect your modem right at that point, you may be able to verify that it is or isn't your house wiring. Perhaps a long telephone patchcord from the interface box into your house would do the trick. Anything to get the inside house wiring out of the picture.
