I've read a couple of threads off-handedly stating you cannot use a non-Vonage box with Vonage. Anyone know why this actually is? Do they actually keep a list of all the MAC addresses on their boxes? Or do they have their own MAC prefix and change the hardware MAC to their own private MAC?

I ask because I have a Motorola vt1005, one of the specific boxes Vonage uses. I bought it when I signed up with Speakeasy. It seems a shame for it to go into the landfill (or have to try to sell it on eBay/craigslist) and to pay to have another one put on a truck and shipped out, when I have a perfectly good one right here.

Looking at Vonage's support, they just have the Voip box set on DHCP. So it's not like it even needs specific IP settings. Maybe there are some settings for service tweaks, but those should be easy to set. I'm tempted to just try to put my MAC into their webpage on signup. Think that would work or would the previously mentioned list of MACs/custom MAC thwart me?

first off, mallomar, welcome to the forum.

second, the reason why non-vonage boxes with not work with Vonage is b/c they keep the SIP info secret. There used to be one way although it is not the most cost effective approach to get a non-vonage box to work if you have access to the voice tab.

The product was called a soft phone but it might not be available any longer. The down side was that it was an additional $10/month and you were limited to 100 outgoing minutes and after that you are charged an overage fee. Not worth it in my opinion. But if you got a soft phone account, they released the SIP information to you so that you can activate it.

but looking at the Vonage website just now, I did not see it as one of the products available.

Thanks for the very informative reply. Well, shoot. Recommend any good Vonage alternatives that let you bring your own router to the party? FYI, I was going for the cheapo $15/month 500 minute plan.

The Motorola VT1005 is not user-configurable in any version. You're not likely going to be able to use it with a provider other than the one who supplied it.

What do you mean it's not "user configurable"? How does the service provider configure it, then? Do they only do it by loading the firmware directly? Don't all of these constitute "user configuration"?

Or do you mean specifically the SIP settings are not configurable?

The SIP settings are not user-configurable. They are provided to the device by a Motorola proprietary provisioning system, the address of which is stored in the ROM of the unit.

Is it possible to get all the SIP settings using a packet sniffer. I tried Ethereal when I first got my RT31P2 Vonage router but I couldn't get everything I needed (password).

I'd really prefer to use my all-in-one router than have to daisy-chain this box off it. Anyone had any luck?

Also, off topic I know, but it does relate to my ability to use a generic router: is it now possible to migrate a Vonage telephone number to another Voip provider?
