As I see it, the cancellation fee is similar to their cell phone cancellation fee. If you have a poor connection with your ISP, you are locked in regardless. If my math is correct, if you kept the service for 19 months it would cost you $190.00. With that being said, the cancellation fee alone would scare me away. Also, I am sure there is a lot of fine print I may be missing.

Hey People,
THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH. They give you one thing and then they use the fine print to get it back.

For user type: Primarily VOIP with occasional need to use a cell phone

I could not find a better low cost solution than this:

Vonage
14.99 / month when less than 500 minutes a month for outgoing non-toll free calls is sufficient or 24.99 / month if you need unlimited minutes.

plus

T-Mobile Prepaid Cell Phone - $10 /YEAR after initial $150 investment in a $50 Motorola V195 phone and $100 for 1000 minutes with Gold Rewards. A minimum of $10 / year for additional minutes keeps the account open and renewal can be done with a few clicks online. All unused minutes roll over every year. No monthly fees or statements.

I only needed an emergency outgoing call mobile phone. When I realized I could have real cell phone service at only $10 for each additional year it was the obvious fit for my limited requirements. I got the cell phone in January and have 973 minutes of the 1000 minutes remaining, so I do not feel like the meter is running when I do use the cell phone.

csnet,
I am doing exactly the same thing you are. My wife has almost all her minutes for the last 3 years. Total cost for 3 years $120.00 with 900 minutes still on her account. I use my cell more and get $100 refills 2-4 times a year. The cheapest and best bargain. I use Vonage so that my wife can call her mother in China for 1 penny a minute. Verizon wants 15 cents a minute put $30+ a month for basic charges.
What amazes me is many of my friends cannot understand why my plan is cheaper than theirs. The "free" nights and weekends is what gets them.
