In order to obtain a SIP ID and password, Vonage customers have to pay for Soft Phone service. This is a pain in the neck if you just want the SIP ID and password to use special hardware or software (such as an Asterisk PBX) on the Vonage network.
I have read through the forums and people say that Vonage won't ever release SIP ID and Password for people's main account because then people won't pay for the Soft Phone service and Vonage will lose revenue.
How about this: charge users $9.99 extra on their main account for access to the SIP ID and password. Vonage wouldn't lose any money and people who want to use other Voip hardware or software would be able to.
Other people say that Vonage won't release SIP ID and Password for unlimited accounts because users could abuse their accounts. Fine. Don't release SIP ID and password for the unlimited plans, only for the plans with a limit, but offer a higher limit than 500 minutes.
I would pay $39.99 a month for 1,000 minutes per month with SIP ID and password on my main Vonage number.
I looked at "Vonage Pro" and hoped that would be the answer, but I don't think so. You enter your Vonage ID and password into the Vonage "Companion", I believe it sends that info via HTTPS to a Vonage server to obtain SIP credentials and then uses that info to access the Vonage network via HTTP.
