We bought the VTech IP-8100-2 and subscribed to Vonage in August of 2005, but now the phones have begun to show some serious signs of deterioration and we'd like to upgrade. However I don't see any other phones available for purchase (excluding the V-Phone) without spending $150 or so on two new phones with another base unit.
Are there really no other phones available to purchase that will work with our current base unit?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give. |

I don't know about phones that will function with your current base unit. However, what I would recommend is that you go with a simple Vonage VoIP adapter, then add the conventional phone of your choice. This gives you a lot more options than going with a VoIP phone. |

VTech phones have become junk. They are made flimsy and as you said they deteriorate. I use a Motorola with answering machine and it's nothing short of great. Sadly Motorola discontinued it. If and when I need another phone I will check Motorola & Uniden which makes similar phones. I returned 2 VTech phones because now they SUK. |

Well we actually got the Linksys adapter and bought some AT&T phones but now we can't get them activated. It's been 5 days and Vonage say they should be activated, but they're not.
Anyway, thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated. |

So you bought the Linksys adapter separate from the ATT phones, correct? Like Steve said, having a standalone adapter is the best way to go. I never liked the concept of the IP 8100. The base unit dies and you have two phones that are useless. The phones take a dive and you have a vonage adapter/base unit that can't be used with other phones. Anyways. Did you try adding your new adapter to your account yourself? You can do it via your online account and then switch your number to your new adapter. |

It is just a fax modem PCI card. Any fax modem PCI card with the Ambient MD3200 chipset on it will work with Asterisk and the Zaptel wcfxo driver. Digium just bought those in bulk and sold them as X100P. The modems are typically available for 8 USD or so. In other words, what you paid Digium for was mostly support. However, the MD3200 chipset is being phased out. Intel acquired Ambient a few years ago and replaced the MD3200 chipset with a newer smaller version called the Intel 537 chipset. In principle, fax modem PCI cards with the Intel 537 chipset could also be used with Asterisk, but this requires some adjustments in the Zaptel wcfxo driver.
