Hi, a little background: I have had the 2 Dlinks working just fine. The 202 is a cable modem & the 514 is a wireless router, & we are able to use it direct connect as well as wireless, no prob.

When I followed Vonages's instructions & inserted the VPortal in between my modem & router, the VPortal works, but the router does not. (if I plug my computer into the port on the VPortal instead, I can get to the inet just fine)

So I tried the other route (no pun intended) of attaching the VPortal to the 514 rtr, as diagrammed in the subject line. 514 works & I can get to the inet on my computer, but the VPortal does not see the inet. (gets error code: 003)

So all the equipment is working, but they won't play nice together. I was trying to follow 1 suggestion of setting up a DMZ on the 514 & put that as the addr of the VPortal, but that doesn't seem to be working either. (unless I did something wrong)

I would prefer to have VPortal hanging off of my router instead of all traffic having to pass thru the VPortal. (seems like that way is just asking for delays) I know people are doing it, so can anyone guide me thru? Thanks!

Steve,

First thing to consider is QoS (Quality of Service). If your setup is Modem -> Dlink -> VPortal

the Dlink will control all traffic. But the DI-524 does not have QoS capabilities so if you are using P2P or any significant bandwidth, your call quality might be compromised significantly.

If your setup is Modem -> VPortal -> Dlink, your VPortal will control data in such as way that your phone conversations will get highest priority.

But the main issue is that the VPortal is probably not a very robust router.

I have decided to get a different router that can handle QoS well (WRT54g) and installed aftermarket firmware on it DD-WRT and I have been very pleased with my phone quality since.

btw, I used to have the DI-524 so that's how I know about it's capabilities.

I will check into that. I guess my concern is that at this point I do not a QoS issue, I have a no service issue. Sad

But that is a valid point, and it might just be that this old 514 just doesn't play nice w/ Vonage. I know it is old..

having just re-read your post, it also could be a configuration issue with ip addresses.

double check the ip addresses for your dlink and your vportal. they need to be different and this might be leading to one working while the other does not. whichever one is in charge of the data flow seems to be working.

please don't take my post as bashing dlink. i used it many years with my Vonage device though my Vonage device was the one controlling traffic.
