Ok, I thought those were for to connect another phone line if the room didn't have a phone outlet in the room

Some of those have very slow data rates, and can't be used with a surge protector.

depending on the cost, would it be possible to wire an ethernet connection between the 2 rooms?

I would suggest looking at the total cost b/4 making any decisions towards a solution.

It looks to me like you have 3 possible ones.

1. Wire a cat5e between the 2 rooms.
2. Purchase a wireless gaming device
3. Purchase PoE adapters.

Cost and also quality would be significant as you intend to download movies which pack a high bandwidth requirement.

Hello,

All I need is a way to connect to the ether net to get to download movies using video on demand.

I already have my dvr hooked up to the phone line and it works just fine using the Vonage router, all I need to do is hook up to the ether net port on the back on the DVR and the Vonage router.

The reason I don't want to do the CAT5 cable is because the way my rooms are figured and the attic location. I have a tri-level and it would be much to do that.

I like the Power line adapter and don't need one that has a phone hook up, just ether net.

Which size do I need to be able to download movies some what fast. I have seen most have data rates up to 200 Mbps

I have been told that the Netgear HDX101 Powerline HD Ethernet Network Adapter is a decent choice.

Thanks.

If you have PoE adapter that can facilitate 200 Mbps, that's far more than any cable modem will allow so your limitations will then be your modem. In other words, most cable ISPs do not exceed at best 15-20 Mbps... Normally these speeds are accomplished by FIOS.

So that means, get anything you can at a reasonable cost.

when looking at a powerline adaptor, make sure that is it compatable with what you are trying to do, I have seen some that are called airplug that work for telephone lines via the home wireing and they dont work well with some Voip systems, somthing about the cycle of the electricity service coming into your home. I dont know about if this will be a factor in the eithernet line or not, but cat 5 is just a faster data stream than cat 3 or any older twisted pair used for home phone, and has more pairs than older twisted pair.

If it were me, i would stay clear of the adaptors that use the home electrical wireing.

for me since I had most connections via wireless is was easier to use existing co-axial and move the cable modem & router next to the sat box.

I went ahead and ordered a CAT5 Cable.

I just hope when I get the CAT5 hooked up to the the Directv receiver and to the back of the Vonage router, its that easy and its recognized without having to do a lot of special stuff.

Thanks for all the advice and help everyone has given me.

Steve, keep us updated on your progress. Do you plan to install it yourself or have it installed by someone else?
