I currently have a RTP300. My power supply failed. I found another supply around the house which was close and plugged it in. Everything is working normally but I want to be sure that the replacement I am using will not burn down the house or short out my unit. The specs for the Vonage power supply was:
Model: M2-12S12-L
Input:100-120V~,
0.5A, 50-60Hz
Output: 12V---1A
The replacement is:
Class 2 Power Units
Model: OH-41032DT
Input: AC120V 60Hz
Output: DC12V 500mA
Your expertise would be greatly appreciated! |

I'd say that it depends on how conservatively the Vonage supply was specified. It had a current capability of 1 A and the new one has only half that. If the RTP300 actually needs 1 A, then the new one probably won't last long. If the Vonage supply was a bit of over-kill, then the new one may do fine. I'd watch the new one closely for awhile and see if it overheats. Put it somewhere where it won't damage something if it does. |

Thanks for the info Steve48. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I have been keeping an eye on it and noticed that it appeared to be getting hotter than all my other devices which use an AC power supply.
Upon further search, I managed to find one with the exact specifications except the mA was 1600mA rather than the 1A specs on the vonage supply. This 1600mA appears to be running(temperature wise) the same or a little cooler than all of my other devices which use AC power supplies and the RTP300 is working great. One other concern is the original power supply is three pronged but this replacement is only two pronged. I imagine that it should be okay if it is plugged into a powerbar with surge protection???
** I heard it was okay to have the mA higher as long as all the other specs were the same(including the polarity). If this is wrong please let me know.*** |

Two pronged is OK. Three prongs are to protect the user, but polarized plugs are good too, and that's what most 2-pronged devices are.
Generally speaking, a higher than needed amperage number is fine; it merely indicates that the supply is capable of doing more than you're asking it to do. Sometimes, if the supply is not regulated, operating it below its current rating can mean that your device gets a higher voltage than it should have. However, you've already hooked it up and things seem to be working, so I'd call it a good job. |
