I think the cancellation fee is after 2 years now. Why only use the service during one part of the year? |

Because for the other 7 months of the year, I'm in a different country and although Vonage is available there, its a WHOLE DIFFERENT set of "Plans" charges and fees and I'm quite confident that to get the service (plan, rate, area code and number) changed by contacting a "Call Center" in India just won't work.
I've tried to get similar changes affected in the past with other servers during other "offshore" customer service calls and to put it mildly, the results were DISMAL. I'm NOT playing that game again (nor will I buy or patronize any service/company that uses such a useless 'service') |

I use my Vonage adapter in a different area code then I live in because Vonage doesn't have a local number, works great for me and really confuses the hell out of people when they want my number. |

Rudy, why wouldn't you just take the Vonage adapter with you and use it wherever you have a broadband connection? You wouldn't have to notify Vonage or change anything on your account. Even if your overseas, you could still use the US phone number to speak to people in the US cheaper then you could using the local phone company in whatever country you in. And they could call you like your still here. |

Probably about 90% of our calls in the 7 months we're outside the US are from friends in that local area (about a 10 mile radius). I don't want them to have to dial LONG DISTANCE to get hold of us.
In a PERFECT world, I could get a seamless change of A/Code and number twice a year and remain on Vonage in both countries but from what I read on these Forums, the liklihood of that happening is about ZERO. Too bad |

Vonage has local numbers that people can dial to call you, an extra step.
What country do you live in the other part of the year? I am in Canada and I pay $24.99 for unlimited usage, but when I travel to the U.S I call the V-Access number and call home for free. |

I too am in Canada right now. What I'm looking for is ideally a CDN Vonage account for 7 months and a US Vonage account for 5 months a year...without paying a Cancellation fee or equipment fee once or twice a year.
With the CANADIAN number, our friends up there can call us toll free, and with an ARIZONA number in the Winter , the same works down there. Thats how its working right now with the CDN and US (Regular) phone companies.
I'm puzzled by what you say about the V-access number..Per the FAQ, the VIRTUAL number works only for INCOMING calls so lets say I have a US Vonage box/number and go to Canada. Can the US friends still call us at the AZ number and the Canadians call us at the Virtual number TOLL FREE in Canada ?
Or conversely, what if I took a CDN Vonage account/box to AZ for the Winter and got a V-number down there, how would 911 calls made on the box in AZ ever work,. virtual numbers being good for "incoming" only according to the FAQ ?
I think I read that the US virtual number $ 7.99 on top of the $ 14.99 (500 minute) rate for a total of $ 22.98 /mo USD (plus taxes/fees of course)
Arrghhhh, I'm getting a HeadAche !! ;-( |

A V-Access number is a local number that is an extra step. They dial the v-access number, press 1 enter your number and the # key and then press 1 to complete the call.
This is different from a virtual number or a toll free number as it doesn't cost you anything.
This link explains it for you.http://www.vonage.ca/features.php?feature=v_access
With regards to the 911 you change that in your account settings, very easy to do.
To get an American account you need to have an American credit card.
I am paying $24.99 a month, but I have been a customer for a couple of years now.
I hope this helps you and doesn't confuse you more. |
